Update 2/23/2012 – Ideabox AKTIV with IKEA Hits Portland

In addition to the Minibox, Oregon-based Ideabox is readying a new prefab in collaboration with IKEA Portland for the Portland Home & Garden Show slotted for February 22-26, 2012. Called “Aktiv,” the home is a new design centered around IKEA products, such as their kitchens, lights, furniture, and other materials. The intent is a cost effective home with great open spaces, soaring vaulted ceilings, and clean modern lines.

Vanillawood Hearts Reclaimed Wood

When Vanillawood founders Kricken and James Yaker outgrew their home office and started shopping for a design studio in Portland’s hot Pearl District, opening a retail store was the farthest thing from their mind. Yet they happened upon a 1000 square-foot warehouse with beautiful natural light and too-good-to-pass-up lease terms, so the design/build team seized the opportunity to showcase their organic contemporary style.

Eco Modern Ranch Remodel in Portland

This is a renovation of a ranch-style home located in the Alberta Arts District in Portland, Oregon.  The owners, builders, and designers — Michelle Ruber and Klaas de Jonge of Encircle Design Build  — renovated the old home with locally-sourced materials and contemporary design.  It’s now used as a short-term, vacation rental to “provide people a home that embodies Portland’s energies of creativity and ecologically minded ways.”

Newly Reclaimed Bathroom in Portland

If you’re thinking about a bathroom overhaul, I think this is an article you will enjoy reading.  Architect Jeff Stern of In Situ Architecture was approached by a homeowner in Portland to transform an old bathroom with a modest budget.  Expanding the size of the room meant a larger budget, while using the same footprint meant saving money through the use of existing plumbing and fixture locations.

Efficient Upcycled Duplex in Portland

Hammer & Hand, a design-build firm based in Portland, is getting well-deserved attention for transforming this circa 1905, dilapidated eyesore into an energy-efficient duplex that uses less than $100 per month in energy.  With the help of Scott Edwards Architecture, the team expanded tiny spaces and transformed the lower level to facilitate aging in place.

Butterfly Roofline Prefab on Sauvie Island

This is one of the latest sustainable prefab homes from Seattle-based Stillwater Dwellings.  The home has three bedrooms, two and a half baths, and 2,300 square feet with a signature soaring butterfly roofline, a great room, and 360-degree views of Sauvie Island, Mount St. Helen, Mount Hood, and Mount Rainier.  After solar panels are installed, the owners expect to submit paperwork in line with LEED Gold certification.
