Woodsy Off-Grid YETA Retreat in Italy

Italian architect Flavio Galvagni of Lab Zero sent us some information on this calming, woodsy cabin that he designed and built with the help of Raffaelli Contract.  The tiny eco hut — roughly 12.5′ wide x 14.5′ long x 10.75′ tall — can be used as a mini-lodge, mountain shelter, meditation space, or temporary dwelling.  It’s easily transportable and both off-grid and off-pipe.

Prefab Sustainable Cabin in West Texas

Inspired by Thoreau with his Cabin and Le Corbusier with his Cabanon, an interdisciplinary group of students at Texas Tech University was able to construct this Sustainable Cabin in a design-build program headed by Urs Peter Flueckiger.  The off-grid cabin was fabricated in a warehouse and is now stationed west of Wichita Falls, where it is being used as a laboratory for students to study sustainable design principles.

Rethinking Waste in a Reclaimed Space

Austin-based Reclaimed Space built this modular prefab with roughly 80% reclaimed materials and presented it at Dwell on Design 2010.  With interior design by Zem Joaquin, founder of Ecofabulous, the 400-square-foot home has Electrolux appliances, a vertical living wall from Fyto Wall, CaesarStone countertops, Mythic zero-VOC paints, Solatube daylighting, LED lighting, and Caroma water-efficient bathroom fixtures.  If you didn't get a chance to see it, watch this five-part video series embedded below:

The (Green) Tiny House Movement

The tiny house movement experienced a surge of sorts when a recent video hit front page Yahoo! But the movement has been growing in popularity over time, especially during the rough and tumble of the last few years.  Tiny houses often include green elements or can be seen as inherently green because they’re small and require tiny amounts of water and energy.  PBS picked up on the topic and published this video embedded above.
