Zero Emission Building Capable of Producing Almost Three Times the Energy it Uses

The recently completed Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) Pilot House, designed by the architecture firm Snøhetta in partnership with Norway’s Research Center on Zero Emission Buildings, is a family home that is capable of producing nearly three times as much energy as is required to power it. The additional energy can be fed back into the grid, or used to charge an electric car.

Modular Off-The-Grid Home

The Eco Pod is a new modular home created by the UK-based company Echo. The tiny home measures 96.8 square feet and can lend itself well to a variety of living arrangements. A standalone Eco Pod can be used as a home office, or extra guest bedroom. The design of these units also allows them to be joined together to create an off-the-grid home, which can be as big or as small as the owners require.

Getting Energy and Clean Water From the Clouds

A team of scientists is currently raising funds through a crowd funding campaign to develop Air HES (HydroElectric Station), which is basically an airship that can extract clean water and electricity from the clouds. More specifically, it does so by harvesting and condensing water vapor, and uses it to spin up an electric turbine generator to create power. The developers have already built a small prototype to test the device and have done feasibility studies, while the main aim of the funding campaign is scaling up the device to produce economically viable levels of water and power.

Gorgeous Off-The-Grid Modular Home

UK-based Hivehaus, led by designer Barry Jackson recently unveiled their first modular home, also called Hivehaus, which is a modular home inspired by the hexagonal shape of the beehive. The basic unit becomes a simple, tiny home, but it can also be expanded on any of its six sides to form a unique and spacious family home.

A Prefab Tiny House Retreat

Vivood, a Spanish architecture group, designed a tiny prefabricated house of the same name, which can be assembled in only about nine hours. Once assembled, it can be used as a guesthouse, retreat, or even a tiny home. When ordered, the prefabricated Vivood comes in easy to assemble modular parts, which already have all the necessary plumbing and electrics installed.

Shipping Container Inspired Disaster Relief Housing

The firm Garrison Architects in collaboration with New York City recently unveiled the prototype of a modular prefabricated housing system. The structures were developed for quick deployment in the event of another hurricane like Sandy, or other natural disaster. By the looks of it, the houses were also very much inspired by shipping container architecture.
