[Video] Margarido House and The View

Remember earlier this week when we talked about the Margarido House, you know that posh, modern home that’s about to be the first LEED-H Platinum home in Northern California?  Well, the always entertaining Sally Kuchar of SallyTV has just posted these videos and we thought it’d be fun to share.  You might know Sally from her recent work designing the Silicon Valley Dwell Nexthouse, but she’s also a regular contributor to Apartment Therapy SF and MoCo Loco.  I can’t help but watch these videos and think about the endless possibilities presented by thoughtful design and modern green materials.

Greensumption, the Ecological Pickle

For background on the video, make sure to check out this Dot Earth interview.  The point being made is quite poignant, probably making you feel as though there’s an environmental pickle with nary a solution.  But we’ve got to do better than that — we have to find solutions and turn this ship around.  So what’s the next step?

Review: Sony Reader PRS-505 Takes the Stage!

So Sony noticed that we do a lot of book giveaways here, and they offered to let us test run a sleek, shiny, silver Sony Reader PRS-505.  What’s the green angle to a Sony Reader?  We can save a lot of resources if electronic readers capture the market: paper, resources to make paper, ink, transportation, space, etc.  Make sure to read Smart Planet for a thorough eco analysis of the reader, though.  Anyway, being avid readers, we decided to give it a shot, because, to be entirely honest, we can’t stop reading!  So I opened up the box about a month ago (yep, I’ve been using it that long to be sure about what I say below), and I was blown away.  Seriously.  The screen is so much like paper — I couldn’t believe it.  As a result, I decided, then and there, to try to make a video so you can see what I see.

What About the Solar Corridor, Mr. Pickens?

It’s clear our country is reaching what future generations will see as a watershed moment as it relates to our current energy situation and how we handle it.  In the U.S. alone, buildings account for roughly 70% of electricity use and 39% of energy use, so any discussion of our energy future naturally implicates the built environment.  The current state of discussions on our energy future has brought together some incredible minds and one of those is the great T. Boone Pickens, an expert in recognizing scarce resources and future energy trends.  Just today, he announced his efforts relating to the PickensPlan — a plan he explains himself in the above video.

Now, I think Mr. Pickens is definitely probing one of the better ways to alleviate our dependence on foreign oil, but I also think he’s skipping over an important aspect of this discussion on our country’s energy mix.

DeFreitas Home Raises Bar for Modern Green Design

Sometimes the images just don’t tell the whole story and that’s where some quality video will do the trick.  I stumbled upon this video while doing research for a prior story and was blown away by the modern, green home.  It’s ridiculous — probably a dream residence for many of you out there.  The passive design, combined with good insulation, high performance glass, solar thermal panels, radiant flooring heating, and an efficient system, keeps this home operating very efficiently.

[Video] Green "Rotating Tower" Planned for NYC?

I’ve not blogged about this interesting and innovative Rotating Tower, which was designed by David Fisher of Dynamic Architecture, because critics have downplayed the concept saying it’s not capable of being built.  But now comes news that the Rotating Tower is not only on the cusp of construction in Dubai, but it’s in advanced design phase for Moscow and intended for New York.  Let me say that again: Fisher intends to design a Dynamic Tower for the Big Apple!  If you haven’t heard about it yet, make sure to watch the above video.  Here’s the general idea:
