The Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building is coming along nicely. Yang is the co-founder of Yahoo! and Yamazaki is a director of the Wildlife Conservation Network in Los Altos. Needless to say, the powerful couple takes pride in their alma mater and the environment. But back to the building. Dubbed the Y2E2 Building, this $120 M building will be quite the eco-structure once completed. Funded in part by a $50 million grant by Yang and Yamazaki, Y2E2 is expected to use 50% less energy and roughly 90% water of a traditional building of similar size. Coming in at roughly 166,000 sf, Y2E2 is expected to be complete near the end of this year, say November or December-ish, and will become the future home for the Woods Institute for the Environment (and a couple other groups). Vanessa Rae, excellent host of the Pulse Videocast, takes us through this video of green builder Blake Holden as he turns a dilapidated Brooklyn brownstone into a vintage green home. While reclaimed wood and materials preserve the look and feel of a classic brownstone, energy–saving features like blue jeans insulation and radiant heating minimize the home’s carbon footprint. Natural building materials prevent toxic indoor air pollution.
Previously, I wrote about Greenbridge Developments, which is a mixed-use development in North Carolina expected to receive LEED Gold certification. This development is an incredible example of the business case for green building. They haven’t even broken ground on the development yet, but it’s 2/3 sold out. Here’s the math. There are about 99 units planned at an average price of $650,000 each (not averaging in revenues from the retail space). Wait, is that right? 66 units x $650,000 = $42.9 million? Wow. I’d like to see the estimated cost of construction because these numbers are incredible (again, without even factoring in retail revenues).

This is the Sustain Minihome, a green, urban RV for the modern-day recreationists. When you see this, you won’t believe how much functionality and comfort can go into a mere 325 sf. To get the real feel of it, go check out the HGTV video of Andy Thomson’s miniHome (the designer). Nice. I’m pretty sure this is going on the Christmas wish list.
Stories about sprawl are pretty compelling. With sprawl, on the one hand, you have unrestrained capitalism and the chase for economic distinction, and on the other hand, you have depleted community resources, mediocre homes, and limited city resources. Tough issues to deal with on both sides. Here’s the gist on two, new sprawl movies:
- The Unforeseen – Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2007, this is documentary about a development near Barton Springs in Austin, Texas. Apparently, the story is told evenly from all sides and somewhere in the middle, the developer gets a little help from the future Governor George Bush.
- Radiant City: A Documentary About Suburban Sprawl – there’s a trailer for this one above. Garage-centric homes, side-by-side, with no community feel whatsoever. Apparently this film is comedic and tugs at the problems of sprawl in a unique way.
I haven’t seen either (other than trailers), but I look forward to seeing them when they come around.
