A home design competition that challenges entrants to choose building materials with minimal environmental impact, Carbon Challenge, has been won by ZeroEnergy Design for a Habitat for Humanity home in Providence, Rhode Island, and by Cho Benn Holback + Associates for its updated row hoses in Baltimore, Maryland.

Lighting Science Group Corporation® has launched a new line of LED lamps that can serve as direct replacements for traditional general purpose lighting. The Definity Professional A19 LED lamps have been created with lightweight aluminum CoolPoly® thermal material that results in a lighter, more efficient, and less expensive option than incandescents.

The Definity Professional A19 LED lamp can achieve performance values of up to 71 lumens per watt while capable of dimming down to 5%. The GP19 LED lamp, which is also dimmable to 5%, compares to 40 watt lamps in ENERGY STAR equivalency performance at 80 lumens per watt.

Many of our home devices are wasting electricity when they are consuming power in standby mode.  Some of these gadgets don’t even have an on/off switch and you have to unplug it or connect it to a power strip that you can turn off.

It might only be a few watts, but add up all of the phantom power consumed in your home and you might be motivated to find a way to save electricity costs. Some estimates put the power usage of standby devices at ten percent of total consumption.
