This is one of the latest sustainable prefab homes from Seattle-based Stillwater Dwellings. The home has three bedrooms, two and a half baths, and 2,300 square feet with a signature soaring butterfly roofline, a great room, and 360-degree views of Sauvie Island, Mount St. Helen, Mount Hood, and Mount Rainier. After solar panels are installed, the owners expect to submit paperwork in line with LEED Gold certification.
Today Stillwater Dwellings announced the completion of another green prefab, which is located in Southern Utah near Capitol Reef National Park. It’s a beautiful home that’s constructed to the same building codes as a typical home, but it’s not typical. In fact, this is an impressive case study of some of the benefits of off-site construction — construction in a controlled environment, preservation of the site by avoiding on-site construction, and use of prefabrication to overcome labor, costs, and site challenges.
Some of the best prefabricated homes seem to be coming out of the Pacific Northwest from companies like Stillwater Dwellings, the design-build firm behind this new home in Santa Barbara, California. The Seattle-based firm, founded by a seasoned builder and developer and architects formerly of the firm now known as Olson Kundig Architects, differentiates itself from others with a trademark soaring butterfly roofline, energy-efficient designs, sustainable materials, and a predictable construction budget.
Since we first mentioned Stillwater Dwellings in March, the new company has been extremely busy. Not only have they lined up plans to build green prefabs in Portland (Or.), Santa Barbara (Ca.), and Healdsburg (Ca.), but they’ve recently completed their first prefab home in Bend, Oregon. The company was kind enough to send us a few photos of the inside and outside, and the modern home is just stunning.

The Seattle-based company was founded by two architects and one builder/developer about eight months ago, and they’re going to break ground on the first home in Bend, Oregon this month. Stillwater put a lot of work into elucidating the “all-in” construction costs of a home, and they’re targeting prices in the range of $130 – 195 psf — quite competitive really for the prefab market.
