Brooklyn Townhouse is Getting a Green Makeover


Gennaro Brooks-Church, the director of the green building firm Eco Brooklyn, is slowly turning his townhouse in a green and sustainable home. The renovations began back in 2008 and they are still ongoing. Just to remind, Brooks-Church is the man behind the recently completed Bright ’N Green complex in Brighton Beach, NY.

Boston to Get an Energy Positive Building


It’s always nice to see sustainable building projects get underway, especially when they’re being built in cities, which must become more energy efficient soon, or else. To this end, the firm Behnisch Architekten has recently unveiled their plans to expand Boston’s EpiCenter into the largest energy-positive commercial building in New England, and maybe even on the entire East Coast. Once finished the building will house the Artists for Humanity charity organization.

College Student Converts a Bus into a Home

Jonathan Von Reusner, a sophomore at Bard College, dreamed of moving out of his parents’ house, but at the same time, did not want to live on campus. To make this dream a reality he recently converted an old school bus into a cozy tiny home, which he plans to live in for a while yet. (more…)

Early Renders of a LEED Gold Residential Complex Unveiled


Studio Gang Architects of Chicago recently released a series of early pictures of a new LEED Gold project that they are designing. The residential building will be built in the Buena Vista neighborhood of Miami, FL by 2016 and it will feature a number of sustainable and eco-friendly technologies, which the architects plan to meet the standards of a LEED Gold certification. The design itself is also pretty futuristic in its own right.

Are Mega-Buildings the Future of Our Cities?


Cities of the future will almost certainly need to be both larger and much more sustainable than they currently are. Due to this assumption, the logical solution is huge mega-skyscrapers, which are capable of producing their own power and handling their own waste. One such design was recently put forth by Urban Future Organization in partnership with CR-Design in the form of the Cloud Citizen building complex which is to be built in Shenzhen, China. Their idea is actually a whole sprawling complex of interconnected buildings, which includes great spaces and comes with a number of sustainable features.

Scientists Combine Solar Cell and Battery into a Single Highly Efficient Package

A team of researchers at the Ohio State University (OSU) successfully produced a dye-sensitized solar cell, which can store power by using air to decompose and re-form lithium peroxide. This device combines a solar cell and battery into one, and it is the first device of its kind. The adoption of this technology could also considerably lower the costs of solar cells.
