The Spanish architecture firm Beriot Bernardini Arquitectos recently renovated a tiny 269 square-foot (25 square-meter) apartment, turning it into a cozy living space for three without the occupants needing to sacrifice the comforts associated with a larger living space.

Manifesto House is Built From Three Shipping Containers

A few years ago the sustainable housing design firm Infiniski completed yet another awesome shipping container home. Located in Curacaví, Chile the Manifesto House is made from three recycled shipping containers, while it also boasts of a number of other sustainable features. Infiniski prides itself on designing and building homes made from at least 80 percent recycled, repurposed and non-polluting materials, which includes disused containers, as well as railway tracks, forklift palettes and even old bottles.

A Gorgeous Shipping Container-Like Beach House

The so-called Coromandel Bach beach home was designed by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects, who drew inspiration from shipping container architecture. The home, which was built like a container, is located in the picturesque region of Coromandel, New Zealand. In building the home the architects wanted to stay true to the traditional New Zealand building methods by designing a structure that was both raw and unique, when it comes to cladding, lining and joinery.

Another shipping container home design worth noting is Caterpillar House (or Casa Oruga in Spanish), which is located in the hills just outside of Santiago, Chile. This home was designed by architect Sebastián Irarrázaval from Chile and it was constructed using 12 recycled shipping containers. Among other sustainable features, the one that stands out the most is the use of passive cooling, which replaces classic, energy-gobbling air-conditioning.

Year Long Study of Net-Zero Energy Home Completed Successfully

It has now been a year since the Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF) in Washington DC has been built and its energy harvesting capabilities began to be monitored. The home was built on the campus at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where scientists and researchers conducted a computer simulation that replicated the energy consumption of a family of four. The results showed the home to be a success, since after a year the home generated 13,577 kWh of energy. This is about 491 kWh more than was needed.
