Ireland’s First Shipping Container Home Will House the Homeless

Ireland-based architecture firm Ceardean Architects, in collaboration with several partners and groups, recently completed Ireland’s first shipping container home, as part of the Ripple Container Homes Project. The home will be donated to the St Vincent de Paul charity and used as housing for the homeless. The shipping container spent some time on exhibit at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), before being moved to Deerpark in Co Cork and given to a family in time for Christmas. While it was on display at IMMA, people could visit it and familiarize themselves with the benefits of cargotecture.

Luxurious Shipping Container Home Under Construction in Texas

When it came time to build a new home, Matt Mooney and his partner Barbara, opted to construct it using shipping containers. Matt drew up all the designs himself, since he is an architect at one of the major architectural firms in Dallas, TX. The home is located in the Old Lake Highlands area and has awesome views of the White Rock Lake. The home is known as the PV2014 house and is a great example of shipping container architecture done right.

Origami Inspired Furniture Ideal For Small Spaces

Downsizing makes a lot of sense from an economic and sustainability point of view, but finding the right furniture, namely such that is functional without taking up a lot of room, is usually not so easy. Which is why the Cut&Fold furniture created by Andrea Kordos and Tony Round of blackLAB architects is so awesome. They created a line of furniture made of plywood, which can be folded up to save space. Their current line is made up of an origami-inspired chair and a flip-up shelf with optional light.

Gorgeous Shipping Container Home Goes Up in Ireland

This recently constructed shipping container home is another prime example of just how versatile cargotecture really can be. Irish architect and farmer Patrick Bradley built this home using four shipping containers, which he obtained from the Belfast Docks. The home is located in a rural area of Northern Ireland, where his new home is by far the most modern one around.

Shipping Container School Built in Africa

Due to being inexpensive and readily available, shipping containers are often used for building affordable housing for the less fortunate. This was recently proven by the Johannesburg, South Africa firm Architecture for a change (A4AC) who used shipping containers to construct a school and community center Malawi. The structure is also capable of operating independent of the grid, since it is equipped with a rainwater harvesting system and a solar power array.
