Simple and Modern Refugee Housing

Germany, among other EU countries, is currently facing the problem of quickly finding adequate housing for refugees and asylum seekers that it has let across its borders. The modular houses, designed for this purpose by Architect and builder Werner Sobek, are a great example of the fact that refugee housing can be modern, affordable and comfortable. The units are called Aktivhaus, and a whole development of them has recently been completed in Winnenden, which is a town about 20 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart. Using Locally Available Materials to Build Refugee Housing

Providing adequate housing and other necessary structures for displaced refugees is quite a task and the Re:Build project shows promise in this area. Re:Build is the brainchild of former Architecture for Humanity leader Cameron Sinclair, and architect Pouya Khazaeli, working in collaboration with Pilosio Building Peace, which is the non-profit section of Pilosio S.p.A, a construction and oilrig equipment manufacturer.

First of IKEA Better Shelters for Refugees to Start Shipping Soon

A while ago we reported that IKEA was collaborating with the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) to create an easy to construct and affordable refugee shelter. The result was the so-called Better Shelter unit and IKEA is now getting ready to start producing the first 10,000 units to those in need. IKEA is in a unique position to produce these shelters en masse, which is what makes this project so promising.

IKEA Refugee Shelter is a Big Success

In 2013 the furniture giant IKEA, in collaboration with the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) developed the so-called Refugee Housing Unit (RHU), a flat packed shelter for housing refugees, which is much easier to assemble and a lot more durable than other such shelters currently in use. Since then, the shelters have been tested in areas like Iraq and Ethiopia and have been deemed a huge success.
