The Oakland, CA Merritt Crossing Senior Apartments consist of 70 units, which are reserved for senior citizens with incomes between 30 and 50 percent of the area’s median income. Over half of the apartments in the complex are reserved for the homeless, those at risk of homelessness, or those living with HIV/AIDS. The project was named one of the top ten green projects by AIA COTE in 2013. The building has received the LEED Platinum certification, as well as the Build It Green and Energy Star certifications.
Marc Rutenberg, the CEO of the Florida company Marc Rutenberg Homes, has recently successfully designed and built a luxury home that complies with and even surpasses all Energy Star standards and is LEED Platinum certified. The Castaway III, as the house is called, measures 4,552-square feet, which is about 3,100 square feet larger than the average zero-energy home. This house proves that there is no need to sacrifice comfort and luxury to reduce one’s carbon footprint.
In the heart of a densely populated Washington, D.C. neighborhood that has easy access to public transportation and bicycle routes, this historically-protected Georgetown rowhouse (circa 1800s) received a restoration treatment that brought it into the 21st century and helped it to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
Environmentally sustainable modifications to the 3,300 square foot home came in at $269 per square foot and had to be approved by the neighborhood’s stringent historic preservation review process.
Dubbed BARNagain, this LEED Platinum-certified home was designed by Rick Hauser of In.Site:Architecture to meet the client’s request for an energy-efficient house that utilized materials from a deteriorating barn for its structure and skin.
The main structural elements of the home were built using timber frames, while reclaimed barn siding served as the exterior skin. Salvaged barn framing was also used for flooring, ceilings, drywall, and decking.
In 2011, the Denver chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) partnered with CAD-1, Inc. to administer a design-build competition for a home that would be built for Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity in Kittredge, Colorado. The winning design of a duplex was submitted by Molly Blakley, Assoc. AIA; Alan Ford, AIA; Kathy Ford, AIA; and Matt Weaver, Assoc. AIA, with Alan Ford Architects P.C. as the Architect of Record.
Grand Junction Federal Courthouse May Become First Net-Zero Building on U.S. National Register of Historic Places
Recently rededicated following almost two years in construction, the 95-year old Wayne S. Aspinall Federal Building and Courthouse in Grand Junction, Colorado has seen the last of its transformations by the U.S. General Services Administration. Building systems performance will be measured and verified against energy targets by project architect, Westlake Reed Leskosky (WRL), for one year, beginning in April 2013, in hopes of achieving LEED Platinum status and becoming the National Register of Historic Places’ first net-zero-energy building.
