Downsizing makes a lot of sense not just for home owners, but also for business owners. The same question applies to both, namely how much space do we really need to live a good and productive life? The architectural firm Studio106 from New Zealand was recently faced with this question, when the renewal of their 1,022 sq ft (95 sq m) office space came up for review. Upon thorough consideration, they opted not to renew the lease, instead designing and building a mobile tiny office, which measures only 97 sq ft (9 sq m). (more…)

Innovative Alternative Housing Solution for the Homeless

Homelessness is a broad and complex issue, but there is no arguing that addressing the basic need for shelter is one of the top priorities when trying to solve it. Bas Timmer, a designer from Holland, has come up with an innovative potable shelter for the homeless. It’s called Sheltersuit and it’s basically a shelter that can also be used as a jacket. Bas created it in association with Alexander de Groot, and the main inspiration was a friend’s father who died living on the streets. (more…)

Plastic Bottle Village is Being Built in Panama

Plastic bottles make up a huge proportion of waste on our planet, and recycling them properly should be a priority. In a unique effort to do just that, a group in Panama is planning to construct an entire village out of discarded plastic bottles. The project is called Plastic Bottle Village and the idea was proposed by Robert Bezeau, an entrepreneur from Canada. (more…)

Tiny Home Made From Hemp

Hemp is a very versatile material, great for making a whole bunch of useful products. The firm Green Built of Albany, NY have now decided to use hemp to build a tiny home, mainly to raise awareness of the benefits of this building material in the US where it is still rather unknown. Shipping Container Apartment Complex Goes up in Texas

Development Strategies, Inc and Alamo Architects, of Austin, TX, are the two firms behind the shipping container apartment complex, which was recently completed in Encinal, TX. NYC to Get Its First Passive Apartment Building

New York City will soon get it’s first passive house apartment building. The development is called Perch Harlem and will be built in a way that uses 80-90 percent less energy than traditionally constructed buildings. It will be located in Hamilton Heights in Harlem. The company behind the construction is Perch Living, while the interiors will be designed by the firm Me and General Design. (more…)
