Honda Smart House US Ready For Testing

The Honda Smart House US has recently been constructed on campus at the University of California (UC), Davis. The house will serve as a test for an off-the-grid living space of the future. Homes and cars are responsible for about 44% of all the greenhouse gases emitted in the US, and in constructing the house, the designers of The Honda Smart House aimed to try and find a way to neutralize these emissions. The house also generates enough solar energy to power both car and home, with a little left over to feed back into the grid.

Modern Office Space Built From a Disused Trailer

Architect Karel Verstraeten recently helped a Belgian couple turn a discarded construction trailer into a cozy office that can also serve a number of other functions. The couple purchased the construction trailer for a mere $20, effectively salvaging it from a local junkyard. This refitting and conversion shows another (and very affordable) way in which disused trailers and containers can easily be turned into something that will continue to be useful for years to come.

Tiny Student Housing Experiment in Atlanta

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has successfully completed their next generation urban housing design project, which involved repurposing an abandoned parking deck by turning it into affordable student housing. This was done through designing and constructing several tiny houses on the top deck of the parking garage, which are known as SCADPads. The units are to be officially launched on April 9, 2014.

Philips Introduces OneSpace Ceiling Lighting

Philips has recently introduced OneSpace, which is basically a luminous ceiling that can be used to replace other lighting fixtures. According to the company, one of the main aims of designing OneSpace was to create a lighting fixture that could become a design element for architects to work with. In other words, using OneSpace lights need no longer be add ons, but an actual part of the house.

Small House That is Huge on Sustainability

One of the winners of this year’s American Institute of Architecture’s Small Project Practitioners Knowledge Community 8th annual Small Project Awards is Small House in an Olive Grove designed by Cooper Joseph Studio. The home is located in the Dry Creek Valley near Sonoma, California and functions almost completely off-the-grid.

Innovative Sustainable Tree House Design

The Toronto based firm Farrow Partnership Architects designed and built a unique, modern tree house, which is made from sustainable materials, and doesn’t harm the tree in any way, or restrict its growth. The latter is made possible by the architect’s novel approach of hanging the tree house from the trunk instead of nailing it to the tree.
