Earlier this month, the Historic Savannah Foundation gave a preservation award to a 54-year old, mid-century modern home in Savannah, Georgia. We were able to get some detail and photos of the kitchen renovation aspect from Bazzèo, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of green kitchen and bath cabinets. The design retained the original kitchen layout, but water-damaged kitchen and bath cabinets were replaced.
This month, Valcucine was selected for inclusion in the Industrial Research section of the Italian ADI Design Index 2010. The company was chosen in part for efforts to produce products with less raw materials and energy, use recyclable materials, reduce toxic emissions and polluting chemical substances, and consider the life cycle of products.
Today, the GreenCycler is making its debut at West Coast Green 2010. This is a "small-footprint" countertop or cabinet appliance that shreds organic kitchen waste and deposits it in a storage and transfer container. In other words, GreenCycler is helpful in pre-composting waste into a size that's just right for quick composting.
Joshua Foss, principal of Thrive Design Studio and ambassador for the Living Building Challenge, recently completed this clean and contemporary kitchen renovation in a home near Theodore Wirth Park. Foss and the owners went with a color palette that, in the end, resembles nature in many ways. The light blue walls resemble water or clear blue skies, the steel and aluminum mimic smooth stones, and the cabinets and floors ground the space with wood.
Cosentino, the world’s largest maker of quartz, has just launched an eco-friendly countertop called ECO by Cosentino. The new countertop is the embodiment of six million dollars of research over a three year period. It’s available nationally through Lowe’s at a price of $68-$118, depending on thickness and color. ECO contains 75% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled raw materials and 25% natural elements.
