Easy to Build Modular Home

The Chinese firm People’s Architecture Office (PAO) has created yet another ingenious home design, which proves yet again that houses don’t need to be hard to build, and that it doesn’t need to take a long time to construct them. The so-called Plugin Tower pictured above would be delivered to the build site it a kit made up of modular parts that the future inhabitant just needs to put together. Glass Tower That Might Actually be Energy Efficient

The recently completed Beijing Greenland Center, built by Chicago’s Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) may not look like a very energy efficient building at first glance, given it’s glazed façade. However, the trapezoidal shape of the windows is said to actually improve the building’s energy performance. The Beijing Greenland Center is 853 ft (260 m) high and has 55 floors. It’s located in the city’s Dawangjing business district and contains offices and 178 of apartments. There is also a multi-story retail zone attached to it. (more…)

Icehotel That Will Stay Open all Year

The famous Icehotel, which they build every year in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, will get built for the 27th year in a row this year, since it melts into nothing each year. But this year another Icehotel was also built, and this one is built to last. The so-called Icehotel 365 is designed to remain standing and open all year, and not just during the coldest months. Easy to Assemble Flatpack Off-Grid Cabins and Homes Coming Soon

The company Leckie Studio Architecture + Design of Vancouver recently unveiled plans to start producing innovative modular cabins, which will arrive in a flatpack package and be as easy to assemble as IKEA furniture. The cabins are currently still in the design stage, but they will function completely off-the-grid and come in many sizes and styles. (more…)

Tiny Studio That Works as an Office or Even a Home

European cities are even more densely populated than US ones, and finding a place that’s comfortable and all your own can sometimes be quite a challenge. Garden sheds are a popular solution to this conundrum. The one pictured above was designed by architect Tjeerd Bloothoofd of the Dutch firm Bloot Architecture. It is located near The Hague, in the Netherlands, and it is a very modern and ingeniously designed tiny studio. (more…)

Clever Tiny Shipping Container Home

It seems like shipping container architecture is getting a revival of sorts, despite all the drawbacks and criticisms of this form of architecture. These include the fact that containers are just too narrow, as well as too toxic to be suitable for people to live in. They also need a lot of reinforcing once you start cutting them up to create windows or join them together to make bigger homes. With the latter there is also the question of whether all the work required doesn’t actually eliminate most of the sustainability of this type of architecture. However, a lot of people still love the simplicity and minimalism of shipping container homes, and one such is certainly Shane Blind of New Zealand. He recently completed his shipping container home which is pictured above and which at first glance does not appear to be made out of a container at all. (more…)
