These Ekocenters are build out of shipping containers and their main aim is purifying water and delivering it to developing communities across the world with a special focus on groups within the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP), which is the largest, and also poorest socio-economic group in the world, comprised of about 4 billion people living on less than $2 a day.

Cigarette butts are one of the most haphazardly discarded items, and an estimated 766,571 metric tons of them end up deposited into the environment each year across the globe. Furthermore, even if the cigarette butts are disposed of properly, they still pose a threat since arsenic and other harmful chemicals leak from them into the earth and waterways. But now a team of researchers from Seoul National University have found a way to recycle used cigarette filters into super-effective energy storage material. They recently published their findings in the journal Nanotechnology.

The First European LEED Platinum Home

The LEED Platinum for homes rating is quite rare. In fact, the recently completed Italian BioCasa 82 is the first home in Europe to receive this high rating. BioCasa82 was designed by the Italian firm Rosario Picciotto Architects and constructed by Welldom, a company that specializes in green building. It is located in Montebelluna, a town near Venice, Italy.

Waste House is Made of Garbage

Waste House is a project recently completed by a team of 253 students and apprentices who were led by BBM Architects Director and senior lecturer Duncan Baker-Brown. The house is located at the University of Brighton’s Grand Parade campus and it is made entirely out of waste materials. It is quite an exercise in recycling, and the builders believe it is the first permanent house made entirely from waste in Britain.
