Mall With Largest Green Roof in the World


Silicon Valley, CA just might be getting a mall with the largest green roof in the world. The developer firm Sand Hill Property Company has recently acquired a 50 acre (20 hectare) plot of land, currently occupied by Cupertino’s Vallco Shopping Mall. (more…)

A House That’s Sustainable From the Inside Out


The Passive House Che has recently been built in a forest in Romania and is currently still being evaluated to receive the Passive House standard certification. As such, it is of course equipped with all sorts of sustainable features, which also include an indoor lawn. It was designed by the local firm Tecto Architectura.

Hemp Makes This Winery Green

It is always nice to hear businesses creating their products in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, and the French winery Château Maris is a great example of it. Château Maris is an organic and biodynamic winery, since their cellar was constructed using bricks made of organic hemp and lime. They also installed a green roof and solar panels, meaning that Château Maris is now a net-zero energy building.

A Treehouse That Teaches Boy Scouts All About Sustainability


The US-based architecture firm Mithum recently unveiled their latest sustainability project, the so-called Sustainability Treehouse, which was commissioned by The Boy Scouts of America. The structure is the effort of a multidisciplinary team, which created this sustainable and innovative dwelling in the forest of West Virginia. The main goal of the house is to provide an educational platform for visiting boy scouts, and it is filled with a number of interactive exhibits.

Sustainable and Affordable Housing Built in Santa Monica


The firm Kevin Daly Architects successfully renovated an old, vacant nursing home on the Westside of Los Angeles, turning it into sustainable and affordable housing units. The aim of the Broadway Housing project, as it is called, was to provide low-income families with a place to live that is within their limited budget, yet still environmentally and economically sustainable.
