Kasita is an innovative housing solution designed by Dr. Jeff Wilson and environmental science professor from Texas. The first Kasita unit has recently been completed and can be viewed in Austin, Texas. Kasita apartments are prefab housing units, which can stand on their own as tiny homes, or be inserted into steel racks to form larger structures such as the one pictured above. (more…)

Gorgeous Lamps Made of Cardboard

Graypants, a design firm from Seattle recently unveiled yet another beautiful collection of lamps made from recycled cardboard. According to the designers, this collection was inspired by the movements of flocks of birds, namely murmurations, and it is just as breathtaking as the natural phenomenon it is meant to represent. San Francisco Restaurant is Sustainable to the Core

The Perennial, a restaurant that recently opened in San Francisco, truly is sustainable through and through. It’s the brainchild of husband and wife Anthony Myint and Karen Leibowitz and boast of it’s own aquaponic greenhouse, uses only responsibly-reared meat, and was decorated using recycled materials. The latter is only the tip of the iceberg as far as sustainable design goes though, and the restaurant is currently seeking a LEED Platinum certification. (more…)

New and Cleaner Method of Recycling Plastic Discovered

There’s probably no need to remind you that plastic is extremely harmful to our environment, and that the current methods of recycling might be doing more harm than good. So when breakthroughs in the latter are made it’s always good news. This has now been achieved by a team of scientists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) in China. Modular Home Made of Cardboard

Nido House is yet another pretty tiny home made from cardboard, a building material that seems to be catching on lately. This home can function off-the-grid, since it’s equipped with a solar power system and a rainwater recovery system, among other things, and it is available in various sizes and designs. It was created by Italian architect Francesca Fadalti and her business partner Michela Romano. (more…)

Gorgeous Furniture Made from Recycled Plastic

The design firm Reform Studio from Cairo, Egypt has come up with a brilliant way to upcycle plastic bags. They are turning them into beautiful furniture using Egyptian handlooms and traditional techniques. The aim of the people behind the project is to find ways in which modern design can be used to solve the world’s problems, one of which is certainly the alarming surplus of plastic bags discarded every day. And what’s more, through their project they are keeping alive Egypt’s rapidly disappearing traditional practice of hand weaving. (more…)
