Today GE introduced a new and innovative 100-watt replacement bulb that uses only 27 watts with the help of LEDs and jet technology. The Energy Smart bulb won’t be available until the first half of 2013 at an undetermined price, though the technology will be on display at the LIGHTFAIR conference that’s being held in Las Vegas this week.
Project Frog, a start-up that designs and builds prefabricated sustainable buildings, recently announced a $22 million investment round led by GE, signaling the multinational company is bullish on not just environmental responsibility but innovative construction methods, too. As part of the relationship, GE will complete a Project Frog building at GE’s Crotonville Learning Center in Ossining, New York by the end of 2011.
GE just announced a big improvement in what it uses to make 16-, 17-, and 18-cubic-foot top-freezer refrigerators in Decatur, Alabama. After retrofitting its existing plant (to keep jobs in the states), GE swapped out HFC-134a as a foam-blowing agent in favor of using cyclopentane, a blowing agent with significantly less global warming potential.
Some folks just don’t want to give up incandescent light bulbs, so GE developed a “customer-inspired” bulb to ease the transition. The GE Energy Smart hybrid halogen/CFL bulb is being shipped nationally with soft white and Reveal options. The new bulb — a blend of three light bulb technologies — has the shape of an incandescent, the efficiency of a CFL, and the immediacy of a halogen.

As electric vehicles begin to proliferate, GE wants to be there to help you charge up at home or on the road. With the design assistance of Yves Béhar of fuseproject, the multinational company just released details of the all new GE WattStation. WattStation has an LED interface and retractable cable to provide a charge in about 4-8 hours, assuming a 24 kWh battery.
