In addition to the Minibox, Oregon-based Ideabox is readying a new prefab in collaboration with IKEA Portland for the Portland Home & Garden Show slotted for February 22-26, 2012. Called “Aktiv,” the home is a new design centered around IKEA products, such as their kitchens, lights, furniture, and other materials. The intent is a cost effective home with great open spaces, soaring vaulted ceilings, and clean modern lines.

Ideabox Now Offers a Tiny House Minibox

Oregon-based Ideabox has been on the prefab scene doing their thing in the Pacific Northwest for a long time now.  I’ve mentioned several of their homes and look forward to sharing a few newsworthy articles here in the next couple months.  As a preview, I thought I’d share a new design of the company — the Minibox.  It’s a 200 square-foot tiny house with a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom/living area.  It’ll have IKEA cabinets and fixtures, energy-efficient appliances, and Energy Star windows.  More soon …

Prefab ADU Keeps Family in One Place

This is a “Granny Annex” in Kent, England, fabricated by in.it.studios in eight weeks. In.it.studios fashioned the backyard prefab with a well-insulated envelope, Canadian Western Red Cedar cladding, a “zero maintenance” living sedum roof, floor to ceiling windows, a sky light in the hallway, an Accoya deck, and other built-ins with PEFC- and FSC-certified woods.

Earth Friendly Garden Studio with a View

Here’s a beautiful garden studio in Oxford overlooking the Thames River.  The custom and contemporary structure was completed by in.it studios with a special plinth foundation, birch ply interior walls, a green sedum roof, and sustainably harvested timber.  The design allows natural light through bi-folding doors, while insulated walls and a glass-panel heater keep the warmth inside in the winter.  The tiny studio has a bathroom and kitchen for use as a guest house and an extra deck space for entertaining.

Clean Tech Tiny House in San Jose

New Avenue Homes, builder of a popular NZE tiny house in Berkeley, has a new Clean Tech Exhibit home on display in San Jose.  The home has a living room, kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom, storage, and all sorts of green technology and sustainable materials.  New Avenue prefabricated the structure and estimates that a home of this size costs about $70,000 to build and permit, not including upgrades or special circumstances.

Menlo Park Passive House Hits the Market

This new home supports the notion that a Passive House doesn’t need to look a certain way.  It turns out that a Passive House (certification pending in this case) can take on a what’s being referred to as a “mission revival style.”  Called Menlo Passive, this “Old World,” luxury home was built by California-based Clarum Homes, a builder of high performance custom homes, and is currently listed for sale at the price of $2,695,000.
