This is North Beach Residence on Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in Washington. The 2,070 square-foot project received a national AIA Honor Award this year and is owned by Rysia Sucheca and John Warburton for use as a summer house from May through October. It was designed by Heliotrope Architects and built by David Shore Construction.
This is Morning Sun, a near net-zero energy home completed at the end of December 2009 for owners Doug and Emily Boleyn. The high-performance abode — designed by Matthew Daby of m.o. daby design llc and built by Cellar Ridge Custom Homes — received LEED Platinum certification, Oregon High Performance Home certification, and an Energy Performance Score of 31, making it one of the most decorated green projects in Happy Valley.
Seattle has its fair share of LEED Platinum homes, but this is the first LEED Platinum single-family home in the state of Washington outside of Seattle. The Bainbridge Island home, blending style and sustainability, was designed by Coates Design Architects for owners Ed and JoAnne Ellis, who wanted an exemplary, modern, green home.
This year’s HGTV Green Home is in the popular Stapleton infill development of Denver, Colorado. The New Urbanist community features nothing but Energy Star homes that are about 30% more energy efficient than standard homes and 20% more water efficient than typical Denver households. But the HGTV Green Home 2011 steps things up a notch with a LEED Platinum certified project — it’s one of about 40 in the state.
Form & Forest recently announced the completion of their beautiful, proof-of-concept, flat-pack cabin on the banks of the Blaeberry River in Golden, British Columbia. The Pioneer model prefab has 1,740 square feet, a mono pitch roof, 180 degrees of floor-to-ceiling glass, and a smart design with large overhangs and cross ventilation.

Sustain Design Studio, a Toronto firm behind the home, just launched a redesigned miniHome to be built in the company’s newly established factory in Bracebridge, Ontario. The new miniHome is lighter, better, and more affordable.
