I’m catching up on some reading and noticed a great article in the October issue of Dwell by @DianaBudds.  In “Counter Arguments,” Dwell shares its findings from putting seven eco-friendly surfaces to test with stains, spills, cleaver chops, and falling objects.  We’ve mentioned most of these surfaces previously, but some of Dwell‘s findings are summarized below in case you’re thinking about an upgrade or purchase.

Dwell Show Prefab to be Sold on eBay

This is the Modern Living Showhouse on display at Dwell on Design 2011.  The green prefab was designed by Jonathan Davis of pieceHomes, built by OneBuild Inc., and styled by Zem Joaquin and ecofabulous.  With 520 square feet, the dwelling is spacious enough to include a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom.  See the interior photos below with a description of green materials and technologies included in the showcase.

Fresh Prefab Readied for Dwell on Design

Update 7/1/2011: Dwell Show Prefab to be Sold on eBay.

Looks like progress is being made on the new showhouse planned for Dwell on Design 2011. The 550-square foot prefab has a lively modern design and will be completed by an all-star project team – OneBuild (a new modular startup), pieceHomes (led by architect Jonathan Davis), and ecofabulous (led by designer Zem Joaquin). The showhouse will be auctioned through eBay with proceeds to benefit Global Green USA.

Dwell Home Selling on Gilt This Week

Here’s a quick note to modern enthusiasts.  Gilt Groupe just listed plans for a Dwell Home by Turkel Design for 50% off the normal rate.  That’s $12,500 for the Finisterre 1115 plan and architectural services to customize the plan.  The plans are for a contemporary home that can be used as a first home or weekend retreat, depending on an owner’s situation, and doesn’t require much land to make it work.

Cozy Off Grid Solar Retreat in Maine

Of all the beautiful homes in the most recent issue of Dwell, I must say this one made the greatest impression on me.  In “Worth the Wait,” Amber Bravo writes about The Porter Cottage in Ragged Island, Maine.  The self-sufficient home – roughly 480 square feet including a screen porch – is both off-pipe and off-grid and made with durable and green materials.
