The first net-zero home from Deltec Homes’ Renew Collection is under construction months after the line launched. The home was prefabricated at their manufacturing facility in Asheville, NC and shipped to Virginia. It will feature passive solar design, solar panels with battery backup, a double stud wall and mineral wool insulation.

Deltec Homes Intros The Solar Homestead

The Solar Homestead by Appalachian State University was the People’s Choice winner in the Solar Decathlon 2011, and now virtually anyone in the world can get the same home from North Carolina-based Deltec Homes.  Deltec, a pioneer of round prefab, will build and ship the self-sustaining home, and send royalties from their sales back to the university located in Boone.  This is apparently “the first time a Decathlon winner is being made available to the consumer,” according to Deltec Homes.

I like to watch the prefab world closely, but there’s one company that I haven’t mentioned yet. That company, Deltec Homes, pops up in the news every other week or so.  Indeed, I noticed these homes are selling well in Canada, according to the National Post, and folks in Florida like that the round homes hold up in powerful hurricane weather, according to Wink News.
