Water Producing Solar Panel

Zero Mass Water, an Arizona State University startup has created solar panel which produces water as well as electricity. The device is called SOURCE and it is standalone, meaning that it does not need any wiring or water input to harvest solar energy and produce drinking water at the same time. They have been running a pilot program since 2015 to test the system, which is already installed in a number of homes and communities.

One SOURCE unit measures 30 sq ft (2.8 sq m). It is capable of generating electricity via the solar photovoltaic panel, while it also has an integrated lithium-ion for storing the used electricity. The device then uses that electricity to power a cycle of condensation and evaporation, which produces 2 to 5 liters of water a day. (more…)

Solar Powered Clothing

Back to the Future II is one of those movies that continue to influence our imagination even though it was released way back in 1989. It foretold a bunch of advancements that we would have by the year 2015, some of which came very close to coming true, some not so much. The movie also inspired a nanotechnology scientist at the University of Central Florida’s NanoScience Technology Center, Associate Professor Jayan Thomas, to try and create solar powered textiles. And he has now succeeded, so something like self-lacing shoes as worn by Marty McFly in the movie could well be available soon.

Thomas has successfully developed solar-powered filaments, which are able to harvest energy from the sun and store it. They can also be woven into textiles to create smart textiles, which would basically be a type of wearable solar-powered batteries. These batteries could then be used to charge our gadgets, while they’d also be able to perform various other functions. (more…)

Toyota Building a Hydrogen Powered Utopia

Toyota is a carmaker, but they are also one of the top providers of prefab homes in Japan. They have recently created their first hydrogen car called Mirai, and have now announced plans to build a community of hydrogen powered homes. To do so, they have obtained the rights to H2PIA from the Danish team who first came up with the concept of such a sustainable community. (more…)

Accidental Creation of a New Material That can Capture Water from Air

Some of the most groundbreaking scientific discoveries happened by accident and now there’s another one to add to the list. A team of researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has accidently created a material that can capture water from the humidity in the air. They were trying to create magnetic nanowires and failed, but this new material they created is even more promising.

The material is made of carbon-rich nanorods, which they observed began oozing water whenever the humidity in the specimen holder ranged from 50 to 80 percent. They vigorously tested the findings, and discovered that the nanorods absorb water in low humidity and release it as water vapor when the humidity is high. The researches describe this material as behaving much like a sponge, in the sense that it is capable of wringing itself out halfway before it’s fully saturated with water. (more…)

Use Solar Power to Grill Your Burgers This Summer

The SolSource, made by the firm One Earth Designs, has been around for awhile and they made quite a few waves a few years ago with their three-in-one solar gadget, which uses solar power to cook food, generate electricity and purify water. The latest version of the device they’re offering is just a cooker, which according to the company heats up five times faster than a charcoal grill. It can also deliver up to 1,000 watts of power, and is capable of harvesting sunlight seven times more efficiently than a typical PV panel. It also requires no fuel of any kind to run, just the sun. A Solar Canopy For Every Roof

Finding ways to maximize the harvesting of solar power is quite possibly the most important step in moving towards a more sustainable future. However, space on which to place these PV cells is scarce, especially when it comes to urban rooftops. The Brooklyn, NY-based firm SolarWorks have found a working solution to this problem. In collaboration with another Brooklyn-based firm, Situ Studio, they created solar canopies that will fit on almost any roof. (more…)
