Use Solar Power to Grill Your Burgers This Summer

solargrill

The SolSource, made by the firm One Earth Designs, has been around for awhile and they made quite a few waves a few years ago with their three-in-one solar gadget, which uses solar power to cook food, generate electricity and purify water. The latest version of the device they’re offering is just a cooker, which according to the company heats up five times faster than a charcoal grill. It can also deliver up to 1,000 watts of power, and is capable of harvesting sunlight seven times more efficiently than a typical PV panel. It also requires no fuel of any kind to run, just the sun. A Solar Canopy For Every Roof

Finding ways to maximize the harvesting of solar power is quite possibly the most important step in moving towards a more sustainable future. However, space on which to place these PV cells is scarce, especially when it comes to urban rooftops. The Brooklyn, NY-based firm SolarWorks have found a working solution to this problem. In collaboration with another Brooklyn-based firm, Situ Studio, they created solar canopies that will fit on almost any roof. (more…)

Solar Roof Tiles as Imagined by Tesla

ext

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and SolarCity chairman recently unveiled a new type of roofing tiles, which are also solar panels. It’s no secret that the Tesla company is rapidly developing new ways of establishing a more sustainable future, and these roofing tiles are a great idea. They would be used to cover a roof just like regular tiles, and thereby incorporate solar energy harvesting potential directly into any home without the need to spend money on and install a separate solar power array. New and Much More Affordable Solar Power System

solpad

Fitting a home with a solar power system is still very cost-prohibitive for many, but a new startup project could change all that. The company SunCulture has come up with the so-called SolPad solar panels, which have the battery integrated into them. Such a system would cut the overall costs of installing a solar system in homes quite considerably. (more…)

Roses Inspire a More Efficient Solar Cell

rosesolar

Breakthroughs big and small are important in the quest towards greater reliance on renewable power, of which solar power is at the top of the list. And one such breakthrough was recently achieved by a team of scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) in Germany. Inspired by the rose’s ability to convert sunlight into energy they designed a film that greatly increases the efficiency of solar cells. (more…)

Shopping Mall Going Solar

panels

The Stockland Wendouree Shopping Centre in Victoria, Australia is using solar-concentrating thermal technology as the sole source of power for their air-conditioning system. Given that a lot of the power consumed by shopping malls, and other such large commercial structures is down to heating and cooling, this is quite a beneficial and sustainable move, and one that more business owners should consider. After all, there is only so much that individuals can do when it comes to assuring a more sustainable future. (more…)
