Glidehouse Prefab Built on Vashon Island

As mentioned a few months ago, Massachusetts- and California-based Blu Homes recently undertook the construction of a new Glidehouse prefab on Vashon Island in Washington.  The home was built in a factory and shipped to the island — by ferryboat, there are no bridges — where it was later unpacked for finishing various site details.  Here are a few photos of the completed home.

Element Prefab Designed by the Owners

Now this is an interesting story as it relates to the prefab construction in the USA.  Blu Homes just announced that the company sold and is currently manufacturing its first home personalized entirely online in 3-D by the purchaser.  Cathy and Walter Pearlman fired up the Blu | 3-D Configurator, settled on the Element Series, personalized it, and then sent their custom design to Blu for purchase.  Blu confirmed the selections, made one change to the bathroom tile, and then the sent the 3-D plans to the factory.

Glidehouse Unfolds on an Island [Video]

This is the next generation of the popular Glidehouse, a home design originally created by Michelle Kaufmann that was later acquired by Blu Homes.  Blu tweaked the design to fit the company’s custom fold-up system of construction, and this is the first, new Glidehouse to be delivered.

A Tech Approach to Green Prefab [Forbes]

If you follow the prefab movement or have an interest in these homes, I recommend reading Todd Woody’s recent profile of Blu Homes in Forbes.  Blu, which is planning a second factory north of San Francisco, uses software, engineering, design, and technology to make sustainable homes attainable to more people.  They’re a “technology company that builds homes,” according to co-founder Maura McCarthy.

Blu Homes Intros New Lofthouse Prefab

Blu Homes just announced a new home style — the Lofthouse — designed by the company’s architects to “appeal to traditionalists and modernists alike.”  The modern version eliminates shutters, expands the windows, and provides an indoor/outdoor living experience.  The traditional version has Colonial-style windows and shutters to fit in an existing or historic neighborhood.

Blu Perfects Iconic Breezehouse Prefab

Blu Homes is on a tear lining up projects and relaunching iconic homes such as the Glidehouse.  This month, the Massachusetts-based start-up is “Perfecting an Icon” in the form of unveiling the new and improved Breezehouse.  In fact, just barely into the relaunch, Blu already sold two of these homes and is working on a few more in the pipeline, according to Maura McCarthy, co-founder and VP of sales and marketing.
