The Honda Smart House US has recently been constructed on campus at the University of California (UC), Davis. The house will serve as a test for an off-the-grid living space of the future. Homes and cars are responsible for about 44% of all the greenhouse gases emitted in the US, and in constructing the house, the designers of The Honda Smart House aimed to try and find a way to neutralize these emissions. The house also generates enough solar energy to power both car and home, with a little left over to feed back into the grid.

This is definitely a problem that needs solving, which is why Metropolis Mag launched the ‘Living Cities’ design competition. The aim of the competition was for designers and architects to propose plans for a residential tower of 30 to 40 stories. The designs also required the use of an innovative structural steel system. Sustainability, multi-use strategies, lifestyle amenities, and multi-generational design were also required to be a part of the proposal.

Today he runs his own tiny house company, Litl Hausen, and the daily effort of constructing these homes has become an integral part of his healing journey, and life in general. Chris is also sure that it is the low cost and small size of tiny houses, which can give people struggling with addictions, homelessness and trauma a safe place to call their own. With his company he hopes to pay it forward, by offering affordable and well-built tiny homes, which can also be taken completely off-the-grid.
