Joshua Foss, principal of Thrive Design Studio and ambassador for the Living Building Challenge, recently completed this clean and contemporary kitchen renovation in a home near Theodore Wirth Park. Foss and the owners went with a color palette that, in the end, resembles nature in many ways. The light blue walls resemble water or clear blue skies, the steel and aluminum mimic smooth stones, and the cabinets and floors ground the space with wood.
Recently, the home of architects Doug Glasgow (Lord, Aeck & Sargent) and Yun Lee (HDR CUH2A), located at 715 Kirk Road in Decatur, Georgia, was awarded LEED Platinum certification. It’s the first renovation in the state to achieve LEED certification, and the first renovation in the southeast to obtain Platinum level certification. Southern Liberties, LLC, recently completed a massive overhaul of this Philadelphia rowhouse and documented the process on the blog, Building Green on Montrose. The 100-year old, 1,850 square foot home now has three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, and the owners hope to obtain LEED Platinum certification for their efforts. It’s listed for sale at $565,000 and incorporates some of the following green strategies:
Remodeling is big these days, and Boulder-based VaST Architecture has a knack for transforming rundown places into vibrant spaces (as they did with a co-work space called the Candy Shop). VaST recently helped Gregg Olsen convert his Boulder, Colorado, 1960s, split-level home into an efficient abode with modern interior design. The interior and exterior renovation was completed at a cost of $107 psf.
My grandfather had an old Airstream that he sold to my dad for $2,000. It was in bad shape after some neighborhood kids smashed in the windows, so it was sold to someone else for a pittance. Now, I wish we still had the Airstream because after seeing what Jim Gooley did to his, I have a hankering to do the same. Gooley partnered with Livingreen to trick out the Airstream’s interior with all sorts of green products.
