It’s only been three months since we first mentioned this New Jersey prefab, yet the modern LABhaus is complete and the owners are spreading their wings in the new place. The single-family home has 2,438 square feet with a basement, four bedrooms, and three baths. It was built with the owners’ budget of $340,000 and includes beautiful green and luxurious elements.
Some of the best prefabricated homes seem to be coming out of the Pacific Northwest from companies like Stillwater Dwellings, the design-build firm behind this new home in Santa Barbara, California. The Seattle-based firm, founded by a seasoned builder and developer and architects formerly of the firm now known as Olson Kundig Architects, differentiates itself from others with a trademark soaring butterfly roofline, energy-efficient designs, sustainable materials, and a predictable construction budget.
This is North Beach Residence on Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in Washington. The 2,070 square-foot project received a national AIA Honor Award this year and is owned by Rysia Sucheca and John Warburton for use as a summer house from May through October. It was designed by Heliotrope Architects and built by David Shore Construction.
This is House Ocho, a project in Carmel, California, designed by Feldman Architecture. The home is beautiful and modern with striking clean lines, though perhaps its most prominent detail is a lively green roof that hides the structure in the hillside of a nature preserve in the Santa Lucia Mountains.
The accessory dwelling unit (ADU) market is alive and well in the Concordia neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. People like these tiny structures — sometimes referred to as backyard cottages, granny flats, or laneway houses — because they can be leased out or used to accommodate an expanding family situation. This is Morning Sun, a near net-zero energy home completed at the end of December 2009 for owners Doug and Emily Boleyn. The high-performance abode — designed by Matthew Daby of m.o. daby design llc and built by Cellar Ridge Custom Homes — received LEED Platinum certification, Oregon High Performance Home certification, and an Energy Performance Score of 31, making it one of the most decorated green projects in Happy Valley.
