Update 10/2/2009: Check out the SFH40 Premiere at WCG 2009!

Last year, West Coast Green had an awesome shipping container home exhibit, and it appears that this year will bring something similar.  Yet a little different.  As confirmed by Michelle Kaufmann (who will be speaking on Friday of WCG), start up Green Horizon will exhibit their green emergency / container housing unit at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California.  The design of the Green Horizon unit is pretty incredible — it knocks the socks off of FEMA trailers — so you’re going to want to see this in person.*

Old 1957 Home Gets a New Modern Look

001

Perched on the east side of the city is this renovated gem at 3602 Apollo.  I saw it a few months ago mid-renovation, and it's hard to miss: floating entry steps, dark mystical brick, expansive new windows, and a modern cedar fence.  Wow!  The home sits on a corner, and that deck provides captivating views of the surrounding mountains and downtown Salt Lake City.  Plus, it's for sale.

Solaris Style A Modern Green Home

This is a new model home in Daybreak, a planned community in South Jordan (about 35 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City).  With the exception of some urban townhomes and condos, Daybreak homes haven't been modern, but they're all Energy Star.  However, Garbett Homes had some home designs put together by KTGY Group and built two of them as model homes.  This is Style A (see Style B).  These modern homes will be replicated with different interior and exterior options on a street in Daybreak.

Daybreak is a thoughtful community in South Jordan (about 35 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City), and all their homes have a certain level of character that you just can't find with most new construction in the city.  Up until now, Daybreak homes haven't been modern, although all of them are Energy Star.  But Garbett Homes recently built two modern model homes, and this is Style B (see Style A).  The home was designed by KTGY Group and will be replicated with different interior and exterior options on a street in Daybreak.

Sweetwater HQ Gets LEED Platinum

Ext-13a

About four years ago, Indiana based audio and music equipment supplier Sweetwater Sound Inc. began running out of space and started looking for other options.  After ruling out the ability to add to their existing facility, they decided to build something new.

The goal was to create something special for Fort Wayne and have the building resonate with the employees, almost all of whom are musicians and have an interest in the environment.  The architecture firm MSKTD suggested that they pursue LEED certification, and after a visit to Herman Miller's LEED Gold facility in Holland Michigan, they were sold.

100k House Gets All Sorts of Props

3501113431_cfef9c485d

A long time ago, we mentioned the 100k House project developed by Post Green in Philadelphia.  The project involves two attached homes designed by Interface Studio Architects, and one was a case study of sorts to try to build it for only $100,000.  What I liked about the project was its attempt to marry three essential elements: style, sustainability, and affordability.  All too often, these three are hard to put together in the same package.  But the media wave followed, and Post Green seems to have delivered what it set out to do.
