The Henry Miller Theatre on 43rd Street in Times Square is pursuing LEED Gold certification. The broadway theater is located inside Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park and will have 1,055 seats. But what's interesting about it is how the facade was braced from the front while everything behind it was demolished (see below). The 1918 Georgian facade fronts a brand new 50,000 square-foot facility with 95% air filtration, FSC-certified wood products, locally-sourced marble, and waterless urinals, etc.
Named for the father of the modern environmental movement, the David Brower Center reflects its namesake's commitment to the environment. The center is expected to receive LEED Platinum certification and hopes to bring together people committed to environmental and social action under one roof. The 24,000 square feet of office space will house a number of nonprofits, including the Earth Island Institute, which was founded by Brower in 1982. In addition, ground level retail space will have a public gallery, a state of the art theater, and an organic restaurant with locally sourced California cuisine.
The Chicago FBI Headquarters has become the world’s first LEED EBOM project to earn Platinum level certification. Under the prior iteration for certifying existing buildings, what we refer to as LEED-EB, approximately 14 projects received LEED Platinum; however, FBI Chicago Headquarters is the first to receive the USGBC’s highest level of certification under LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EBOM). To date, though, only about six projects have been certified under EBOM since its inception in early 2008.
Well over a year ago, I heard William McDonough was working with Google on some green design plans near the Googleplex (all hush hush-type stuff covered by an NDA). Since that time, I haven’t really noticed much information on those plans, that is, until I caught this article in Mountain View Voice talking about Google’s extraordinary building plans. It appears that SHoP Architects coordinated the work of several architectural firms to get these preliminary plans going. But, for the time being, Google has decided to put the green office structure on hold.
Within the last couple months, The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. and Vornado/Charles E. Smith released their shiny new design for what could be Washington D.C.'s first LEED Platinum office building. The 365,000 sf building is planned for the corner of 17th and H Streets, NW, a prime location just two blocks from the White House. Designed by Gensler, 800 17th Street / PNC Place will have an Eco Lobby featuring a three-story climate wall that radiantly cools the lobby with flowing water.
Just recently, I noticed news that One Waterfront Place in the River District of Portland has received Platinum precertification under the LEED-CS program. One Waterfront Place is said to be the first Platinum precertified project on the West Coast and the first precertified project of any level in Oregon. And, as you can tell with the above rendering, the $100 million, 270,000 sf commercial office building has a posh location right near the river.
