LEED, Prefab, Apartments: The Modules

This 72-unit building, The Modules, is under construction near Temple University in Philadelphia.  Designed by Interface Studio Architects, the apartment project includes 60,000 square feet of living space with a green roof, parking for 38 cars, and storage for 50 bikes.  What’s impressive is not just that this will be a prefab, green, contemporary, apartment building, but that it may be the largest modularly-constructed LEED for Homes project in the nation.

Affordable, Solar Powered, Eco Housing

Part of an abandoned, former industrial site in Oakland is now Ironhorse at Central Station, a 99-unit affordable housing development.  Owned by Bridge Housing, designed by David Baker + Associates, and built by J.H. Fitzmaurice, the ~$41.4 million project includes one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for families with incomes ranging from $18,000 to $50,000.  Ironhorse is a fascinating display of green, affordable housing that's also solar-powered.

Smart Living at The 20 on Hawthorne

This summer Gerding Edlen Development opened a 51-unit apartment building in Portland, Oregon called The 20 on Hawthorne.  The 20 is over 50% leased already and LEED Silver certification is pending.  Homes range in price from $900-$2,500 and in size from 502 to 968 square feet.  Perhaps more interestingly, though, this building has a stackable, automated parking system that fetches cars in about 30-40 seconds on average.  It's pretty cool to watch
