Recently The Crossing Apartments, a luxury, transit-oriented development seeking LEED Silver certification, opened in Anaheim, California. The project, designed by KTGY Group, Inc., includes 39 live/work units and 312 lofts and one- and two-bedroom units in a contemporary and eco-friendly setting.
After completing a pair of ultra green prefab townhomes in Oakland, ZETA Communities is now designing two larger projects in planning for parking lot sites in Berkeley and San Francisco. In collaboration with developer Panoramic Interests, these tiny SmartSpaces will be car-free, factory-built, and designed for LEED Platinum certification.
Already 70% leased, this impressive 66-unit apartment project, Silver Gardens, is the first affordable housing development in New Mexico that has been designed and built to obtain LEED Platinum certification. Located on a reclaimed brownfield near bus and rail access, Silver Gardens boasts some impressive green elements.
This 72-unit building, The Modules, is under construction near Temple University in Philadelphia. Designed by Interface Studio Architects, the apartment project includes 60,000 square feet of living space with a green roof, parking for 38 cars, and storage for 50 bikes. What’s impressive is not just that this will be a prefab, green, contemporary, apartment building, but that it may be the largest modularly-constructed LEED for Homes project in the nation.
Part of an abandoned, former industrial site in Oakland is now Ironhorse at Central Station, a 99-unit affordable housing development. Owned by Bridge Housing, designed by David Baker + Associates, and built by J.H. Fitzmaurice, the ~$41.4 million project includes one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for families with incomes ranging from $18,000 to $50,000. Ironhorse is a fascinating display of green, affordable housing that's also solar-powered.
This summer Gerding Edlen Development opened a 51-unit apartment building in Portland, Oregon called The 20 on Hawthorne. The 20 is over 50% leased already and LEED Silver certification is pending. Homes range in price from $900-$2,500 and in size from 502 to 968 square feet. Perhaps more interestingly, though, this building has a stackable, automated parking system that fetches cars in about 30-40 seconds on average. It's pretty cool to watch.
