Portland’s Caravan is First Tiny House Hotel in USA

Tiny houses have found homes as hotel rooms at Caravan Tiny House Hotel, which celebrated its grand opening in the Alberta Arts District, a neighborhood in northeast Portland, Oregon, on July 27, 2013.

Owners Deb Delman and Kol Peterson say that one of the goals of Caravan is to showcase the tiny home lifestyle. Three unique units (Rosebud, Pearl, and Tandem) share the common area outdoors that includes covered seating, a hammock, a barbecue, and a fire pit. In a hostel-like environment, visitors are encouraged to socialize.

Snoozebox is a Portable Container Hotel

Snoozebox is poised to take advantage of an alignment of circumstances with the Olympics in London.  The company provides temporary lodging in the form of portable, stackable, scalable hotel rooms made with shipping containers.  Snoozebox is currently providing about 320 rooms for security personnel at Hainault Forest Country Park from July 14 – August 15, 2012, according to The Financial Times.  The portable hotel can be ready within 48 hours of arriving at almost any event or location in the world, and rooms have internet, TV, a personal safe, attached bathrooms, etc.

Five-Star Luxe Container Hotel in China

Halfway across the globe in a rural village outside of Changzhi in China, a developer was inspired by emergency housing made with shipping containers in Japan and decided to build a five-star hotel out of them, according to CNN Go.  The hotel — 香箱乡祈福所, which apparently translates as Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House — was built with 35 new containers and includes 21 tiny, luxe guest rooms of either 161 or 321 square feet each.

Reclaimed Glam Tent Heading to Colorado

We’ve followed the growth of Reclaimed Space over the last few years and the Austin-based company has delivered some incredible rusty modern prefabs all over the country.  The factory is now finishing up work on a “Glam Tent” for Dunton Hot Springs Resort outside of Durango, Colorado.  The build includes a reclaimed bathroom and tent roof from Montana-based Reliable Tent & Tipi.

Tiny Tubular Hotel Built in Three Months

This place was inspired by Dasparkhotel, an innovative hotel in Austria built with recycled concrete tubular rooms.  Pictures of the place have been floating around the internet in the last few weeks.  It’s called TuboHotel, and it’s located 45 minutes south of Mexico City.  Each TuboHotel room includes a queen bed, desk light, fan, and under-bed storage.

A Passive House Hotel in Washington?

The small town of Oroville — north central Washington four miles from the border — has big aspirations.  A developer has plans to build the first Passive House hotel in North America, according to Examiner.com.

Developer Steve Morberg already secured Highway 97 frontage for the project and will use a design by Bôd Structures, formerly known as American Container Homes, to construct the hotel in phases.
