Green Meets Danish Modern at Denmark50

Denmark50, located in Los Angeles, is comprised of a showroom and warehouse full of vintage Danish Modern furniture and accessories.  And of course, buying vintage is such a green way to go.  The showroom (below) is a nice display of what the company has to offer, but the warehouse (also below) is the really amazing part.  Mid-Century Danish furniture is stuffed into the large space as far as the eye can see: couch after couch, chairs, tables, and any other piece one could imagine.

LA Green Condo Remodel An Inspiration

I find the stories behind green homes to be quite interesting.  I was at the gym and happened upon this article in Home Magazine about Adam Coulter, a 27 year-old screenwriter and actor living in LA.  He successfully battled cancer in his teens and has been in remission since that time.  But since his bout with cancer, he's always attempted to live in the healthiest environment possible.  This third-floor condo is an example of Couter's quest for healthy living -- it's been renovated with bamboo flooring, organic linen draperies, recycled glass tiles, zero-VOC paints, and locally produced, sustainable materials, etc. 

Vivaterra, Great Spot for Eco Furnishings

VivaTerra is a catalog and online eco-friendly home accessories and furnishings company.  You will need to peruse their offerings with a bit of a critical eye and decide for yourself what is truly eco-friendly, but there are a lot of great choices.  Less sustainable offerings to watch out for include river rock bath mats.  The rocks are taken from a natural environment where they belong and do not replenish like trees or bamboo.  I would also stay away from tropical hardwoods since most of them are not truly eco-friendly and travel quite a distance to the USA.  One great VivaTerra choice would be their beautiful "Gustavian Vintage Bed" which is made by a master woodworker in the USA using salvaged Douglass Fir wood from a torn down building, non-toxic glue, and a food safe finish for about $2000. 

Modern Green Seattle Home Opens Doors

I received an email from Modern Dwelling in relation to this contemporary, green pad and pretty much had to share some details.  First things first, if you're in the Seattle area, there's going to be an art showing at the home this Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 7 pm, so make sure to check that out.*  Otherwise, the Mount Baker Residence, as it's known, is perched on a slope with views of Rainier Valley to downtown Seattle.  With tons of natural lighting, four bedrooms, two and a half baths, and 2470 sf of living space, it's tough to go wrong in a home that looks like this.  Here are some of its green features:

High Design at The Riverhouse

This is an interior shot of the new Vivavi Pop-Up Store at The Riverhouse in Battery Park City.  I was emailing with Josh Dorfman, founder and CEO of Vivavi, about the store prior to the giveaway last week and he's pretty excited about the designers slated for the store.  You may notice the Girado chairs, Signature 2.0 console, club chair & ottoman, and Spring Chairs, but probably one of my favorite designs in the store is the artwork by Sandy Schimmel.  I've included a few images below -- they're made from junk mail scraps.

Lotus Bleu puts a New Spin on Vintage Furniture

Buying vintage furniture is super green, but it's not always easy to find pieces in great shape, especially upholstered items.  Lotus Bleu has fixed that problem for us.  They offer vintage pieces redone in new, modern fabrics.  Lotus Bleu is located in San Fransisco, but if you're not in the area, you can order right online.  Current items for sale are displayed in addition to items that have already been sold, to give you an idea of what might be available at any given time.

DeFreitas Home Raises Bar for Modern Green Design

Sometimes the images just don't tell the whole story and that's where some quality video will do the trick.  I stumbled upon this video while doing research for a prior story and was blown away by the modern, green home.  It's ridiculous -- probably a dream residence for many of you out there.  The passive design, combined with good insulation, high performance glass, solar thermal panels, radiant flooring heating, and an efficient system, keeps this home operating very efficiently. 

How About SMEG's Retro Modern, Efficient Frig?

This fridge has a fantastic retro appearance and could save you a lot of money on your utility bills.  Designed by SMEG, it's a compact 9.22 cubic feet and uses only  305 kWh/year.  That makes it one of the most efficient it its class according to the government's energy guide, which is used to rate all Energy Star appliances.  This stylish fridge isn't big -- it's under 5 feet tall, but maybe it will encourage you to trade space for style and save energy as a result. 

A Stunning Flatpak House in Aspen, Colorado

This is a Flatpak house in Aspen, Colorado.  I stumbled upon these shots in Flickr, so I don't have much background on the project.  But we've featured modern Flatpak homes before in the Goodwin-Wise Flatpak and Lazor's Flatpak.  Flatpak houses each have their own particular and interesting features, but the Flatpak system is the same.  It's a menu of components for living that includes walls, cabinets, bathrooms, kitchen, and various built-ins.  The components are pre fabricated and designed to meet the needs of a various owner and/or site.
