At least when it comes to camping trips, or other instances of needing renewable power on the go. Well, those troubles could be at an end by the use of Windpax. The latter is a portable wind turbine, which is fully collapsible and will not take a lot of space in your backpack. Its designers are currently using Kickstarter to fund its production.

When traveling to remote areas, charging your phone or tablet can be quite a hassle. But the portable solar charger SunJack, which was created by Harold Tan, can make this problem go away. The solar charger is also a great emergency kit addition for off-the-grid travel. SunJack is very portable, as it folds up to the size of an iPad. The creator will also be donating a part of the sales to help give the villagers in Papua New Guinea healthy, access to non-toxic lighting, since in these areas the people still use lighting that is quite hazardous.

Honda Smart House US Ready For Testing

The Honda Smart House US has recently been constructed on campus at the University of California (UC), Davis. The house will serve as a test for an off-the-grid living space of the future. Homes and cars are responsible for about 44% of all the greenhouse gases emitted in the US, and in constructing the house, the designers of The Honda Smart House aimed to try and find a way to neutralize these emissions. The house also generates enough solar energy to power both car and home, with a little left over to feed back into the grid.

3D Printed Homes Made in China

The company WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co recently printed several 3D houses in Shanghai, China. The houses were printed using concrete and a huge 3D printer. Each of the houses they printed measures 200 square meters and costs only about $4800.

Philips Introduces OneSpace Ceiling Lighting

Philips has recently introduced OneSpace, which is basically a luminous ceiling that can be used to replace other lighting fixtures. According to the company, one of the main aims of designing OneSpace was to create a lighting fixture that could become a design element for architects to work with. In other words, using OneSpace lights need no longer be add ons, but an actual part of the house.

Reinventing the Toilet for the Benefit of All

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, recently developed a new and highly efficient composting toilet called Blue Diversion. Human waste has significant value, since it can provide fertilizer and phosphorus and the Blue Diversion toilet is able to successfully harvest both. These byproducts can also be sold at a profit, so this toilet does more than just provide water efficiency or off-the-grid-living.
