Smart Windows Coming Soon

Smart windows are the logical next step in the evolution of home design. Basically, the idea behind them is that instead of adding blinds or curtains to windows, so as to control the amount of heat or light entering the home (or for privacy) the windows would already have this function built in. Sounds futuristic, but a team of researchers at Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have found a simple and quite affordable way to achieve it. (more…)

Roses Inspire a More Efficient Solar Cell

Breakthroughs big and small are important in the quest towards greater reliance on renewable power, of which solar power is at the top of the list. And one such breakthrough was recently achieved by a team of scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) in Germany. New and Cleaner Method of Recycling Plastic Discovered

There’s probably no need to remind you that plastic is extremely harmful to our environment, and that the current methods of recycling might be doing more harm than good. So when breakthroughs in the latter are made it’s always good news. This has now been achieved by a team of scientists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) in China. Shopping Mall Going Solar

The Stockland Wendouree Shopping Centre in Victoria, Australia is using solar-concentrating thermal technology as the sole source of power for their air-conditioning system. Given that a lot of the power consumed by shopping malls, and other such large commercial structures is down to heating and cooling, this is quite a beneficial and sustainable move, and one that more business owners should consider. Gorgeous Furniture Made from Recycled Plastic

The design firm Reform Studio from Cairo, Egypt has come up with a brilliant way to upcycle plastic bags. They are turning them into beautiful furniture using Egyptian handlooms and traditional techniques. The aim of the people behind the project is to find ways in which modern design can be used to solve the world’s problems, one of which is certainly the alarming surplus of plastic bags discarded every day. And what’s more, through their project they are keeping alive Egypt’s rapidly disappearing traditional practice of hand weaving. (more…)
