Super Sustainable LivingHomes Prefabs Taking Over California


The company LivingHomes has launched their first sustainable, LEED platinum prefab home back in 2013. They have also partnered with the non-profit Make It Right organization and architect William McDonough with whom they have created the so-called C6 home, which is an affordable LEED Platinum certified home, which also meets the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star standard.

First of IKEA Better Shelters for Refugees to Start Shipping Soon


A while ago we reported that IKEA was collaborating with the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) to create an easy to construct and affordable refugee shelter. The result was the so-called Better Shelter unit and IKEA is now getting ready to start producing the first 10,000 units to those in need. IKEA is in a unique position to produce these shelters en masse, which is what makes this project so promising.

Prefab Straw Insulation Panels Make Very Sustainable Homes


The sustainable builder BaleHaus recently constructed several energy-efficient homes, which were built using a prefabricated straw insulation system made by the company ModCell. BaleHaus is actually made up of 3 firms working together, namely Cadan Developments, ModCell, and White Design. So far the group has built several different sized homes, from townhouses to apartments, which goes to show just how versatile the straw building system can be.

Montainer Shipping Container Homes Ready to Order


The Missoula, Montana bases company Montainer has begun selling the first prefabricated model of the shipping container homes they offer. The Nomad 192, as the home is called, can be purchased though their website, while the company plans to expand their offerings in 2015 with several other models, which can already be preordered.

Home That Blends Into Its Environment


The architecture studio Reform from Poland is planning to build a very unique home in the woods. They’re calling the project Izabelin House, and a large portion of its exterior façade will be covered by mirrors, which sort of makes it look as though the upper floor of the home is just floating in midair in the forest.

Shipping Container Apartments Coming to Downtown Phoenix


The architecture firm StarkJames LLC has designed an apartment complex made from recycled shipping containers, which is currently being built in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The primary reason behind this project was providing affordable and sustainable housing near the city’s busy downtown area.
