The firm Garrison Architects in collaboration with New York City recently unveiled the prototype of a modular prefabricated housing system. The structures were developed for quick deployment in the event of another hurricane like Sandy, or other natural disaster. By the looks of it, the houses were also very much inspired by shipping container architecture.

A Shipping Container Apartment Complex Soon in DC

Washington DC will soon get it’s very own apartment complex made of repurposed shipping containers. The complex will be located at 3305 Seventh Street. NE in Brookland. The firm Equity Group LLC is behind the project, which will involve turning an existing single family home into a three-story, four-unit shipping container apartment complex. Work has already begun, and the architects are confident the whole building will be finished by the end of August.

Skyscraper Made of Waste

The French design firm Chartier-Corbasson has come up with an innovative skyscraper, which would be built using the recycled waste of its occupants. The so-called Organic London Skyscraper would be constructed from panels that are made from recycled plastic (e.g. plastic bottles, …), which would all be sorted and refabricated on site. The skyscraper is called organic, because floors would be added on according to demand for new housing units.

Tiny Apartment Big Enough to Fit a Family of Three

Downsizing is certainly one of the components of living sustainably. However, while living in a tiny house sounds good for a single person, many can’t envision a whole family living in one very small space. The Spanish architecture firm Beriot Bernardini Arquitectos recently renovated a tiny 269 square-foot (25 square-meter) apartment, turning it into a cozy living space for three without the occupants needing to sacrifice the comforts associated with a larger living space.

Manifesto House is Built From Three Shipping Containers

A few years ago the sustainable housing design firm Infiniski completed yet another awesome shipping container home. Located in Curacaví, Chile the Manifesto House is made from three recycled shipping containers, while it also boasts of a number of other sustainable features. Infiniski prides itself on designing and building homes made from at least 80 percent recycled, repurposed and non-polluting materials, which includes disused containers, as well as railway tracks, forklift palettes and even old bottles.
