This is the first detached, single-family home in Illinois to obtain LEED certification. The modern residence received certification a little over a year ago in May 2008, so there's no new news, but the home is beautiful and worth sharing. Designed and owned by Alphonso and Michelle Peluso, co-founders of Vertex Architects, LLC, the home is support by six, exposed steel columns that complement the exterior glass and stained cedar cladding.
A couple weeks ago, we mentioned you can buy the McGlasson weeHouse in Duluth, Minnesota, and now we have news that a weeHouse STUDIO is for sale — for the crazy price of $48,000. It's currently located in Siren, Wisconsin, but the buyer can have it shipped anywhere the land will take you for $1,000, plus about $7 per mile. The 324 square-foot pad is just perfect as an artist retreat, guest/bunk house, yoga studio, or freelance workspace.
Seeking to domino the success of the i-house, Clayton Homes just announced a partnership with general contractor Empire Construction to create a new e-living concept for green, multi-family dwellings. In a couple months, the e-living concept will be applied to the construction of six units at Raintree Apartments in West Knoxville. With construction estimated to be complete by December 2009, five of the units will be occupied by families, while the remaining unit will serve as a model home.
There's a 250 square-foot storage shed renovation making the rounds on the internet right now. Designed by Jeremy Levine Design (also behind the North Eagle Rock renovation), this new guest house features a prominent tilted, redwood clad wall that divides the bedroom and the bathroom. I’ve had the opportunity to keep in regular contact with Rob Pyatt (e.g., 1940s Boxhouse and Pinon House), principal of Pyatt Studio, and his work with Urban Hens is really taking off right now. The Urban Hens Project is meant to develop a sustainable, closed-loop model for establishing chickens in urban settings.
