Resysta, the Non-Wood, Wood

(c) Max Strang Architecture

Resysta is an attractive, sustainable, and non-plastic alternative to wood.  With the look and feel of wood, Resysta is very durable, water-resistant and most comparable to the typically unsustainable, tropical hardwoods; however, it contains no wood.  Suitable for decking, cladding, interior wall cladding or marine applications, Resysta is flexible enough for all projects.

FLO Modern LED Light from Lumina

With Lightfair and other design shows in the works, I expect to see a few new products like this Flo light, which was designed by Foster + Parters for Lumina, a lighting manufacturer in Italy.  Flo is an unobtrusive reading light with a dimmable 6W LED that outputs 475 lumens.  The aluminum frame and head is planted with a steel base, and the head rotates 300 degrees for precise task usage.  Flo joins a host of other LED task lamps on the market — I’ll post a price when it’s offered here in the United States.

Loft Style Mini House in Tiny Town

This 566-square foot modern home sits on an infill lot in Toronto and has been getting a lot of attention in the last few months.  That’s partially in response to the design and maybe some general interest in small homes — this one is roomy for an urban condo but small for a single-family house.  The owner, Patrick Flynn, wanted something modern, low-maintenance, and minimalist and this place is all of those things.

Colorful Hexagon Wall Tiles by Träullit

Hexagon is a new wall tile collection by Form Us with Love for Träullit, a manufacturer of wood wool cement board in Sweden.  The shapely material absorbs sound, retains heat, resists fire, and resists moisture — making it easy to dress up a large blank wall or add a block of color to an otherwise minimal space.  Träullit makes each tile with a combination of wood wool, cement, and water. Hexagon is on display at a church in a secret location in conjunction with Stockholm Design Week 2011.
