Rocio Romero Debuts Stackable Prefabs

Rocio Romero, the architect behind the LV series of prefab homes, just announced the availability of stackable prefabs.  Referred to as the LV2 — a 2-story stack placed on any LV series unit, the custom add-on costs the same as regular LV series units.  Rocio Romero has sold over a hundred LVs and says the average cost to build, including the kit, shipping, foundation, and finish costs, is about $120 per square foot (not including land).

RLG Properties, Inc. recently announced this new single-family development in Atwater Village that takes advantage of the small lot ordinance in City of Los Angeles.  With 23 homes under construction — all of them will have 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and an open floor plan — prices at The Mews start at $599,000.  Designed by Corsini + Stark, green features include extensive daylighting, operable clerestory windows, natural ventilation, Grasscrete permeable paving, bamboo flooring, drought tolerant landscaping, energy efficient appliances, and an installed solar system.

Two Passive House Row Homes in Philly

If you're in the area, the next project by Postgreen, the development company behind the award-winning 100k House, will be open for tours on Thursday, December 17.  Dubbed The Passive Project, the tour will include two newly constructed row houses built to a rigorous and trendy German Passiv Haus standard.  When certified, these homes — located at 2318-2320 Amber Street — should be the first to do so in the Philadelphia.

Recycled Container Parsonage in LA

Recently, Peter DeMaria, AIA, of DeMaria Design, this month received an award from the South Bay/Long Beach Chapter of the AIA for his design of the East LA Four Square Church Parsonage.  The project was built using a hybrid form of traditional stick frame construction and seven recycled cargo containers.

Oak Park Garage Exudes Style and Sustainability

Tom Bassett-Dilley recently sent us these photos of his prototype green garage on a 30' wide lot in south Oak Park, Illinois.  The garage was built with FSC-certified lumber, a salvaged concrete slab, locally produced recycled content steel siding, and salvaged cedar siding.  There's also a Live Roof green roof, which was designed to channel water into rain barrels for collection.

Living Smart, Green in Salt Lake City

The other day, Andrew Stone took me through this newly constructed abode located on an infill lot in Salt Lake City.  The contemporary home, currently listed for $685,000, was designed by A.K. Smith Architects and comes with some slick green technology.  The entire home is wired up with a Control4 Home Automation System — accessible on an iPhone — and connected to the fireplace, thermostat, and lighting.
