The Moderne Container Sales Center


Recently I noticed this container structure, The Moderne Showroom, which is a sales center for a mixed-use tower planned for Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  It's not the first container sales center we've seen — recall the MirabeauB sales center — but it's interesting, temporary, and functional.  The structure was designed by Rinka Chung Architecture and provides another example of shipping container reuse in an architectural context.

IQ Haus Prefab Unveiled in Los Angeles


Last week, a newly completed IQ Haus by DNA European Design Studio was on display at Dwell on Design in Los Angeles, California.  The container home, clad in a contemporary application of Douglas Fir, was enjoyed by conference attendees and could have been the "coolest thing" there.

Puma City Revised for World Cup 2010


After the debut of PUMA City in Boston last year, PUMA redesigned the massive retail container space to create a new space in New York to coincide with FIFA World Cup 2010.  The smaller space, PUMA City NY, features two separate shipping containers configured as a retail space by architects LOT-EK and builders SG Blocks, maker of the Harbinger House.

Container Crossbox with a Green Roof


When using shipping containers for a structure, you'll want to do your homework, but often the results can be stunning, as is the case here.  Located in Brittany, France, Crossbox was built with four containers and topped with greenery.  Two modules cantilever over the other two, but you can hardly tell what's going on as drywall and cladding camouflage the industrial skeleton.

Container Studio Space in New York


Artist and DJ Andrea Shapiro went to her architect for help creating a work space in Amagansett, New York.  With a limited budget of $60,000, Shapiro needed roughly 700 square feet and an "inviting and reflective" studio, according information posted by the architecture firm on ArchitizerMaziar Behrooz Architecture suggested using old steel containers for the structure to save costs.  The result is shown below with additional images and video.

Rebuilding Shelters with Old Containers


We've seen a lot of effort to provide emergency and long-term shelter for disaster areas.  For Haiti in particular, some groups, like Shipping Container Housing and Green Container International Aid, are trying to reuse shipping containers to get people out of the elements and into something that can withstand hurricane season in a couple short months.  The renderings shown here are from GCIA, who is seeking the donation of containers to construct container cities in the area.
