In this interview, G Living sits down with Peter DeMaria to talk about his work using containers in modern home design and construction. I was really impressed with DeMaria — he tells you everything you ever wanted to know about container architecture and talks about scalability, sustainability, mold, termites, insulation, design, etc. If you're thinking about using containers in your project, the ones mentioned in this interview cost about $900 – $2500 and are about 320 sf per unit. Great video!
I opened up the local newspaper today, and much to my surprise, there’s news that the first, mid-rise container building in the U.S. is planned for downtown Salt Lake City. The project was designed by none other than Adam Kalkin, container architecture expert, and will be called City Center Lofts. The green, ultra-modern condo building will have eight units and a ground level art gallery.
4/4/2009 Update: Logical Homes has officially launched!
Tonight, Dwell posted image of AEGEAN, a modern prefab made of shipping containers. If my information is correct, Aegean is the first prefab from Peter DeMaria for Logical Homes. The Logical Homes website is still in pre-launch with just a simple landing page. Aegean was built inside the CES convention center for Olevia, a company that makes energy-efficient TVs. Via Dwell.
[RSS - Click Here to View] I found this video on YouTube of Jason Steele’s vision for a shipping container building. The idea in the video shows two sides being taken off to expand the floor area by 50%. He also has bamboo landscaping to create shading on the sun-exposed southern part of the home (Phoenix, Arizona). Looks pretty cool, but let’s see if it gets made, because in the world of container and prefab design, reality counts for something
There's something so rustic, so American about this project. Two brothers. A long history living on the land of your youth.
