Collision Works Shipping Container Hotel Opens FIRST CONTAINER in Detroit

Celebrating its grand opening in the Eastern Market area of Detroit on May 19, 2013, where visitors came from as far away as Berlin and Paris, FIRST CONTAINER, the first structures for a planned 36-unit boutique hotel and community space that is being built from upcycled shipping containers has garnered national attention as the “most important hotel in America.” Collision Works is being made possible by funding from a Kickstarter campaign and partnership with the Detroit Collaborative Design Center and Eastern Market Corporation.

Melbourne Festival to Feature Shipping Container Display in Urban Coffee Farm

Young members of the HASSELL design firm have partnered with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival to bring the story of coffee production to the Red Stairs public amphitheater on the banks of the River Yarra in Queensbridge Square. The Australian festival, which runs from March 1 to 17, 2013, is celebrating its twentieth year of annual and year-round events that spotlight local food and beverage venues, as well as local agriculture and outdoor markets.

Located on a 26,000 square meter agricultural smallholding in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, the New Jerusalem Children’s Home aims “to become one of the best children’s homes in Africa in the provision of holistic and integrated quality care to orphaned, abandoned, abused, traumatised, vulnerable and HIV positive children.” Founded in 2000 by two sisters, Anna and Phina Mojapelo, the current facilities include nurseries, dormitories, a communal kitchen and dining area, a crèche, a Montessori preschool, play area, and a permaculture vegetable garden.
