Haiku: Most Efficient Ceiling Fan in World

Just as Nest changed the thermostat game, perhaps Haiku will change the residential ceiling fan game.  This is the “world’s most efficient ceiling fan,” the “quietest fan in the world,” and the “most sustainable” fan, according to Big Ass Fan, the company behind the new product.

Haiku is available in a few finishes, including caramel bamboo (above), cocoa bamboo, white matrix composite, and black matrix composite.  The bamboo “airfoils” — not your regular fan blades — are made with moso bamboo, which grows rapidly, and covered in a solvent-free finish.

The fan is powered by a cool-running inverter that delivers an 80% improvement in energy efficiency when compared to conventional ceiling fans.  Haiku is an Energy Star product, according to Big Ass Fan, and the patent-pending blades have been engineered and balanced to deliver smooth airflow without rattling or wobbling.

Haiku has several variable speed settings and adjustments for sleep, timing, reverse, etc.  The fan is available for pre-order — the composite ones at about $825 and the bamboo ones at about $1,045 — and Big Ass Fan will be launching a new website for Haiku this week.  Keep your eyes open for that.

    Wow, Big Ass Price Tag!

Thats gonna be a looooonnnnnggggg payback compared to a regular E* fan

To be fair, what’s the payback on quiet or comfort?

Are you for real? What’s the price for quite and comfort is your answer? I actually considered buying one till I saw your lame response, then realized how rediculous it was to pay that much for a fan. There many top of the line fans that are both energy saver and just as quite.

I was game for purchasing one or two, but at that price tag, no thanks.

  • Overpriced

Who cares about a ceiling fan? Really? The company must be run by idiots to ask this price!

I care about ceiling fans, frankly. Yes, the price tag is very steep, but you pay for innovation and BAF has made leaps and bounds in details that previously no one has paid attention to. It’s not about huge gains, it’s about tailoring your environment to eek out every last energy efficiency that you can manage. As demand increases, prices will go down. You pay to be the first to have technology. One may recall the Dyson blade-less fan (or “Air Multiplier” as they call it), hugely popular, but it just doesn’t work, and remains tremendously overpriced almost three years later. I bought one ($300) and WANTED to like it so bad but just couldn’t justify it. It was cheap, flimsy, fragile, noisy and almost entirely ineffectual. You will not find items like this from BAF, as they have been historically a company that produced primarily commercial (see DURABLE) goods. I am personally really excited about this and will be keeping an eye on the price.

After getting a quote they charge shipping and tax. I learned They also charge 25 percent restocking fee if box is open and 50 percent restocking fee if fan is taken out of box and installed. All this for a fan that will cost you a little shy of one thousand dollars. No exaggeration. The price is way too much. They were offering the fan for 200 discount but only for a presale that no one knew about. For the price of the fan they should ship for free. I don’t like this company and I will let everyone I know and come across to stay away. Hopefully another company will make a similar fan and sell it for more of a reasonable price.

I just filled out their “application form” for information on buying one of these fans. I their “comments” field I said it looked very good if it wasn’t too expensive. I guess I don’t have to wait for their response now to know that it is FAR too expensive. A $500 price tag would have been quite expensive, but around $1,000!!!! That’s really over the top. They must have a very comfortable profit margin. Whatever. Its not going to work for me. Too bad. I really like what I see and read about it.

Great looking fan with lots of features, would love to own one..
Would I buy the fan?, NO CHANCE, WAAAAY over the top expensive.
I have 6 fans in my home, all quiet, great air movement and all under $300.
I’ll stick with Hunter, Casablanca or Minka.

Just gorgeous.  I will wait a year for the knockoffs to be made.  I don’t mind paying more for new technology plus extra for styling but unless this is rediculously hard to make then the price is a non-starter for me.  I say we all write to hunter or other companies and tell them to move to this styling.  Then the price will start dropping.  We need to implement style and efficency.  You can only implement if you can justify the cost.  If this is the iPad of fans it should cost as much as an iPad, not 3 times as much.  I am so dissapointed I was ready to purchase 3.  I will check back in a year or two to see if it is doable.

Holy crap batman…well I guess its a great deal if you have millions of dollars to throw into your ceiling. Unfortunately I’m just a supervisor at a nursing home and even though I would Love to put this in my home I think that $1000.00 price tag is just some big honcho sitting on his bum making sure that the littleman knows their little thanks. Ill stick with my bamboo slightly wobbly and barley noisy fan I already have
