Smith & Fong debuted SoyBond, a bamboo flooring and plywood line with a soy-based formaldehyde free adhesive system, at this year at the USGBC’s Greenbuild. Smith & Fong has always promoted and offered non-urea formaldehyde resins; however, the step to a soy-based formaldehyde-free adhesive advances their product line further.
Under development in partnership with Ashland Inc. since 2008, SoyBond offers mechanical properties at or above current standards and similar products. It has also been tested and supported by California Section 1350 ensuring high indoor air quality.
Now able to source a rapidly renewable flooring product sealed with a bio-based adhesive, SoyBond may be the most sustainable hard flooring option on the market.
Also of note, although not yet commercially available, the Smith & Fong’s Exhibit Booth was built from another noteworthy product line, Plyboodex. Plyboodex is a bamboo decking product made of sustainably harvested moso bamboo and non-urea formaldehyde based resin. Currently in an ebony tone the decking would be their first outdoor product to hit the market. Look out for an official launch in the next few months.
