New Handmade Tiles from Clayhaus

Portland-based Clayhaus Ceramics is now offering handmade ceramic tiles in a modern array of colors and several shapes and sizes.  The new company, founded by the husband and wife team of Jason and Megan Coleman, was formed out of Stardust Glass tile when the Colemans left the glass business.  Now with a focus on ceramic products, Clayhaus is offering beautiful tiles to order in a studio and facility that is completely powered by renewable energy.

Modern Chicken Coop in Urban Seattle

Check out this lively, modern chicken coop by Nicole Starnes Taylor of MAKE Design Studio.  Taylor designed it for three chickens and their owners in urban Seattle.  With a screen floor and castors, the mobile hen house fertilizes the underlying ground.  Also, the coop has a hinged door for easy access and can be used as a chicken tractor if need be.  Taylor built the 15 square-foot coop with salvaged framing lumber.

DesignByMany recently held a contest seeking a low-cost, low-energy home for New Orleans. Synergy: A New Beacon of Passive House

Synergy is a design for an affordable, cold-climate Passive House by Tim Eian of TE Studio, the firm behind the first Passive House in Wisconsin.  Eian says Synergy is “a beacon for the 21st century renaissance of residential high-performance design.”  In other words, this is a home for everyone: it’s traditional, comfortable, light-filled, and attainable.

Designer CFL Perfect for Naked Lighting

Plumen 001, a designer CFL by Hulger, is now being offered for sale in the U.S.  The 120-volt light bulb uses 11 watts, outputs 680 lumens, lasts about 8 years, has a color rendering index of more than 80, and has a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin.  It is not dimmable and requires careful cleanup if broken, but that’s how these lights can be.  Pre-orders ship on June 1, and each bulb sells for $29.95.
