Alex Wilson, this year's winner of the Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Housing, selected EnGuard Insulation by Vita Nonwovens as the BuildingGreen Product of the Week following Greenbuild in Chicago. The 100% polyester insulation product is made with recycled plastic bottles, or, more specifically, 15% post-consumer and 35% pre-consumer recycled content.
This batt insulation is completely recyclable. EnGuard contains no formaldehyde, carcinogens, or VOCs. Vita Nonwovens also indicates that the insulation is hydrophobic and won't absorb moisture.
The product is compression packed and expands upon opening. The "precut friction fit design" allows for easy installation, and it's safe to touch and install — no irritation to be expected.
Vita Nonwovens offers an unfaced, R13 product in a 69 square-foot package for just under $50 MSRP, which is about $0.72 per square foot, according to Wilson of BuildingGreen. R19 and R21 packages will be available in a few weeks.
The manufacturer currently operates out of the south and east regions of the nation with facilities in Fort Wayne, Indiana, High Point, North Carolina, and Schertz, Texas.
