Zody Chair by Haworth, Inexplicable Green Comfort

Zody Chair

This is The Zody Chair by Haworth.  It’s an incredible chair.  Best chair I’ve ever used.  It gives you this feeling that’s hard to explain.  It’s kind of like when you get a new pair of shoes at the age of 8 or 9.  Those shoes make you run faster, jump higher, and do more.  Well, this chair is that for business people.  It helps you do more when you’re doing a lot of sitting around.  I feel different in this jet black, super modern, eco-friendly, award-winning chair.

Today’s that big shopping day with all the crowds:  it’s Black Friday.  If you’re in the market for a quality gift, I honestly think you should just ring in an order for one of these and call your Christmas shopping done.  I’m serious.  I recently toured the offices of a green renovation and they had a room full of Zody chairs.  When they were looking for chairs, they felt the Zody chair was superior in green benefits and had a reasonable price.

Testing the Zody:
Haworth was kind enough to send me the Zody Chair to test drive.  I’ve been mulling over this article for probably 2-3 months.  I wanted to list the pros and cons of the chair, so as to give it an even-handed, fair review, but the thing is, I can’t think of one thing I don’t like about it.  The arms move in and out, front and back, side to side.  I like that feature, especially when I’m reading articles and cases.  I can lean back, resting one arm in the right spot, and read for hours.  This instructional video provides a glimpse at all it can do.  This is not your ordinary chair.

Zody Pattern Back

I’m not one to use the lumbar support option, but it seems to work fine.  You can even work different sides of the lumbar — lower, upper, left, and right — all to your heart’s content.  I just don’t seem to need that yet.

The chair looks like a million bucks.  The way I see it, you spend a lot of money on suits, shoes, ties, or whatever, why not spend money on a chair that you’ll use for several hours, year after year after year.  The chair retails for $699-$1299, depending on the features and fabrics.  That’s a steal.  What did you pay for your bed?  What did you pay for your kitchen table?  Think of the objects you sit on and consider how much time, in comparison, you spend in an office chair.  Chances are, the payback on a Zody is going to be quick.

Zody + Sustainability
The Zody Chair is Cradle to Cradle certified at the Gold level.  It’s made with up to 51% recycled content and up to 98% recyclable materials.  It can be taken apart (in about 15 minutes, although I haven’t tried that yet) and easily recycled when you decide the process of creative destruction needs to take its course.  It has no PVC and is GreenGuard certified.  The Zody Chair can help you towards LEED certification, too.   It’s also the first, if not the only, chair endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association.  I can’t keep up with all the awards it’s received.

So, there’s a lot of information in this article, but I’ve been thinking about this chair.  Testing it.  Using it.  Looking at it for a long time.  This is the kind of gift the special business person in your life would love.  You can buy them online or browse options here.  You might think about the Zody when you’re doing that next office remodel or office move.  Whatever the occasion, if you’re in the market for a chair, I suggest you give this one some honest consideration.

I loved that chair but I decided to go with the Think chair from Steelcase – eco-friendly and incredibly comfortable. Either way, both these chairs are great for those of us who sit all day!

I love the Zody and it’s not because my company sells them. It’s just an amazing chair. From design to function to it’s sustainability, it’s amazing. Every month we trade chairs in my office so we can experience the different brands. However next month I’m going to refuse to give mine up!

I can understand if you’re principally opposed to Aeron chairs, but I got mine on eBay for under $300. They seem to be fairly ubiquitous up there and on Craigslist as well. Plus, buying used is green, right?

Sadly, I find this chair to be horribly uncomfortable. I sure wish it felt as wonderful as everyone else seems to say it is, but no matter how I adjust it, there is absolutely none, zero, nada lumbar support. In fact, the shape of the seat pushes my hips downward in the back, forcing my spine to curve in the opposite direction that it should be. I pray that I can find some lumbar support to attach to this chair, because this is the chair that my employer has decided upon. Others in my office complain about how uncomfortable they are, although some people to like them

    KMK,
I absolutely agree with you. This is one of the most uncomfortable chairs I’ve ever sat in. I despise the mesh back. It’s good and well to have all the adjustable parts, but the arms are quite annoying since they always move around when one wishes them to remain stationary!
Perhaps the company should offer a petite sized in this chair. It may make a difference.
